Hi the hubby and I stayed in these apartments from 21st to 28th September 2011, we had read a lot of mixed reviews before hand and went with an open mind. I would recommend these apartments to groups, singles and couples who are after a cheap and simple accommodation base.
As we had read reviews we knew what to expect in terms of checking-in, deposits etc.. this is my review of the Don Gregorio:
Check-in is open in-between the hours of 9am to 1pm and 4pm to 8pm, we expected to arrive just before 1pm but we arrived late and there was no-one at reception. There is a map showing where to go if you arrived out side of the check-in opening hours (near the levante club hotel), to collect your keys, but we didn't want to leave our cases unattended so i sent the hubby to the supermarket at the top of the street for some drinks and snacks as the pool bar was shut. So we just hanged around until reception re-opened at just before 4pm.
There is a notice board that explains about the deposit which is €120 or £120 per apartment. Toilet rolls are not replaced, you must buy your own when you run out and the maid only comes and replaces your towels/changes bed linen if you stay longer than a week. If your key is lost it costs €50 to change the lock. You get 2 keys, one for your room and one that works on the front gate and entrance to the building. We found the gate/entrance to be locked most evenings but not during the day.
Even though the notice says that it is 120 €/£ deposit we only paid £80, i presume this was because we are a couple and less likely to trash the rooms than say, a big group of girls or boys. We also paid for a security box, i cant remember how much it was but i know it was cheap and we got €10 back at the end of our stay. The man at reception was friendly when checking us in.
2 lifts take you to the floor you are staying on, with 2 sea view apartments on each floor, we were on the 10th floor and the lifts never broke down once. The landing lights didn't work but if you kept the lift door open you can easily see your room door and unlock it with your key. The locks on the door double locked and there is a notice on the door advising you to do this.
The apartments are quite big for a couple but i think they would be a bit small for 4 people. Straight after the door there is a little utility room which contains a little sink, a water storage tank and a sweeping brush. Next to the utility is the small kitchenette which had 2 electric cooking rings, a kitchen sink and a large fridge freezer (the type a lot of us have at home), the kettle is an old metal whistle type and there is no toaster. We had plenty of cutlery, plates, glasses, pans, tea-towels etc... directly across from the kitchenette is the bathroom which had a toilet, bidet, tiny bath with overhead shower and a sink. On top of the sink is a large mirror and glass shelf. Next door to the bathroom is the one and only bedroom which contained 2 single beds, a bedside cabinet and a large built-in wardrobe with a chest of drawers. We pushed the beds together to make a double.
The living room was directly out of the bedroom and next to the kitchenette which had 2 sofa beds, a dining room table and 4 chairs, a pay tv which takes any € change and costs €1 per hour -a little tip- turn off the set top box for the English channels (sky news, discovery channel, dave and itv)! Out to the side of the living room was an enclosed balcony which we used to dry towels and clothes, this also contained the apartment safe box. The main balcony is to the front of the living room and had a plastic patio set.
There is no air conditioning but if the windows and front balcony door is left open you get a lovely breeze which runs through the whole apartment.
The poolside bar is open from 10am to 7pm which is also when the pool is open, the pool gets sun most of the time and we found it adequate for us to sit around, the hubby had a swim in it and he seemed happy with the depth and size.
The apartments are in quite a good location, up the road from Calle Londres and the Levante Club apartments and the indoor market. There is a small hill to walk up so if any one has trouble with walking or are very unfit i could see a few issues.
In all we found the apartments ok for us even though they are in need of an update, some of the doors had holes in them and the furniture has seen a lot better days. To be honest these apartments could be someone's idea of staying in hell ( just read all the reviews!) but if you go with an open mind and don't expect 4 star when paying a lot less you will be fine! :D
