We had spent Christmas at Les Dunes two years previously when it had only three stars; we liked the junior suites, the Gala Christmas Eve Dinner was excellent, breakfast was fairly good, and of course its position is unbeatable. This year we had to pay extra for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, for either a buffet at 20 euros each on each day, with an extra 20 euros each per day to have it served in the Terrace restaurant. We opted to pay, 160 euros in total on top of half board price. We were surprised, to say the least, to be informed that we had not paid enough for two gala meals in the restaurant. After 'discussion' we were told that as we had protested, the manager was now 'inviting us' for dinner on Christmas Eve! The meal was excellent; minor comments - no menus on the tables at all, and when we requested one there were none in English. On Christmas Day we duly went into the buffet restaurant at the back of the hotel to find an average choice (lots of prawns but nothing else of note), not even a sprig of holly on the tables, and not even a glass of wine included - a Merry Christmas indeed! The German female receptionist was rather abrupt, and only a couple of staff spoke any English - not a problem for us but maybe for other English guests. Next year it will be a different hotel with no extras - once bitten! Oh yes, and we have no idea where the extra star came from, the suite has the same fittings and facilities as two years ago!
