“Pretty horrendous, but if you need a cheap place to sleep, go for it!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2009

A few years ago, I spent a year of high school studying in Spain and went for a 5-day long weekend to Madrid, staying at Numancia. I have to admit that we had one of those straight-out-of-the-movies moments of absolute horror when we saw the room, and instantly thought about getting a nicer room in some other place. We did stick it out, and it was a bonding experience that we still talk about, for better or worse! My two friends were paying with credit cards and the machine didn't even work, and I think it might have charged one of them twice, which was of course not an ideal start to the trip. We actually went out and bought huge blankets to sleep in because the sheets on the bed looked so nasty that we didn't want to touch them. However, for what we were there for, it pretty much served our needs. The bathrooms could certainly have been worse, they were fine and pretty clean. We hardly slept because we were out ENJOYING Madrid so much (which is very easy to do), so we were really never in the hostel. So it was a good price, we had a private room which was great, and it was a good location to explore the city. One really unfortunate thing was that we only got 1 set of keys for the 3 of us, with 4 different colored keys on it that each connected to a different door. Spend a week with that and you'll understand why newer hostels have those wristbands that buzz you in automatically. One of the (ancient) keys broke, and one night one girl went home earlier than another friend and me, and didn't wake up to throw us the keys, so we had to wake up the manager who was NONE too happy. Another group of friends were staying at Cat's Hostel down the street and we were just so jealous the whole week, I would definitely switch and stay there next time. However, it was great to get a cheap room and spend money on the plenty of other things to do and see in Madrid, so I can't complain too much. If you need a cheap place to rest your head and you don't get too freaked out by grimy lime green bedding, go for it!

“avoid this hostal if you are not insane”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 March 2009

I came to this hostal one year ago but I wrote the review now. The reason is they finally sent us to another hostal called Xucar which even doesn't exist on tripadvisor! Plus I need to carry all my baggages by myself from one end of the street to the other end! This is a family-run hostel and don't expect the staff to speak any English understandable. When we arrived, I saw some half-naked man coming in and out from the rooms. If you want something more than a bed, please avoid it!

“sucked”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 June 2008

I thought this placed looked decent, but when I arrived it looked was old and cramped. For some reason I was brought to the hostel below, Hostel Graciela, the room was miniature, extremely old, and felt very unclean. I was in a room right next to the front door, so the buzzer to get in was going off all night. I came home and checked Graciela's website, the photos are very misleading and the room should have been 8 euros less then what I had paid. I was there only ten hours and was very happy to leave.

Pension Adeco, however, also in Madrid was a nice, clean, comfortable place to stay for only 2-5 euros more!

“Stay here if you are on a budget, but do expect comfort or ambience.”

Stay in this hostal to save money while enjoying a convenient location near to a metro station and within walking distance of the Plaza Major, Gran Via and most sights.

While I would NEVER take my girlfriend here, I can recommend it for the budget savy. Bring along a can of Lysol to give the room a good spay down!

  • Liked — Cheap, convenient.
  • Disliked — Seedy neighbourhood, old building, questionable sanitation, noisy.

“Cheap and cheerful”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2008

I chose the hostal numancia purely on the basis of price. At under 20 euro a night for a private room it saved me a lot of money while I was finding my feet in Madrid.

I booked a single but was given a twin, with a sink, wardrobe and small table. The room was a nice size for one, but may have been a bit more of a squeeze if there were two and you had a lot of luggage.

There were indeed only two bathrooms, but both were very clean and outside peak times there wasn't too much of a queue. The place seemed to mostly be frequented by groups of young italians and was very noisy at night, but at the prices they charge and given the part of town its in, that's pretty much to be expected.

It is located south of the gran via in a rather seedy part of town, and I felt a bit unsafe outside as a young woman alone after midnight, but I had no problems and in a group wouldn't anticipate problems.

I left a pile of books at the hotel and after emailing got a quick response and was able to pick them up two days later.

I probably wouldn't stay here again because I would rather pay a bit more to stay in a safer part of town, or pay less and have the friendliness of a youth hostel but my experience here was pretty positive overall and the staff were friendly.

  • Liked — value, sink in room
  • Disliked — noise, seedy location, shared bathrooms
