A few years ago, I spent a year of high school studying in Spain and went for a 5-day long weekend to Madrid, staying at Numancia. I have to admit that we had one of those straight-out-of-the-movies moments of absolute horror when we saw the room, and instantly thought about getting a nicer room in some other place. We did stick it out, and it was a bonding experience that we still talk about, for better or worse! My two friends were paying with credit cards and the machine didn't even work, and I think it might have charged one of them twice, which was of course not an ideal start to the trip. We actually went out and bought huge blankets to sleep in because the sheets on the bed looked so nasty that we didn't want to touch them. However, for what we were there for, it pretty much served our needs. The bathrooms could certainly have been worse, they were fine and pretty clean. We hardly slept because we were out ENJOYING Madrid so much (which is very easy to do), so we were really never in the hostel. So it was a good price, we had a private room which was great, and it was a good location to explore the city. One really unfortunate thing was that we only got 1 set of keys for the 3 of us, with 4 different colored keys on it that each connected to a different door. Spend a week with that and you'll understand why newer hostels have those wristbands that buzz you in automatically. One of the (ancient) keys broke, and one night one girl went home earlier than another friend and me, and didn't wake up to throw us the keys, so we had to wake up the manager who was NONE too happy. Another group of friends were staying at Cat's Hostel down the street and we were just so jealous the whole week, I would definitely switch and stay there next time. However, it was great to get a cheap room and spend money on the plenty of other things to do and see in Madrid, so I can't complain too much. If you need a cheap place to rest your head and you don't get too freaked out by grimy lime green bedding, go for it!
