“Great place to crash but don't expect frills”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2008

Our room was small and simple but adequate and clean. The building is a bit odd to be honest but very charming. Almost makes you feel as though you're wandering around a museum of sorts. The owner/manager while not overly outgoing was friendly and happy to accommodate requests and answer questions. Share bathrooms were very clean and the place was very quiet, hauntingly so at times. They also had free wi fi which was excellent.

Oh, and great location.

  • Liked — Location, clean bathrooms
  • Disliked — So many stairs.......:)

“This vacation made me want to move to Spain even more...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2007

When I made the reservation I knew my plane was to arrive late in the evening. Julio, the hotel owner, was so kind to wait for my arrival. So a better start of my vacation is not imaginable.
The hotel has a very nice atmosphere because of the colors and the scent of incense; just as a vacation should be like: laid-back. The rooms also are decorated attractively. I had one of the smallest rooms, but it's good enough.
From the hostal to the plaza mayor is a 5min. walk. And although it's situated in a busy street the hostal itself is relatively quiet.
Julio is as nice as most Spanish people and can give you good advice when you want to see something specifically.
Though it has only been six days, this vacation made me want to move to Spain even more...

“Ok, but”

I'm staying there now. It has 2 types of rooms - basic sleeps with shared bathrooms (very clean) and rooms with private bath. If you just need a place to crash, it´s fine. But you need to contact Julio by email because he is rarely around to answer the phone. I stayed there 2 days in mid March and then Easter weekend. He tends to be around in late afternoon only. So you must give him a definite arrival time by email. If you just show up he is unlikely to be there. Also the cancellation policy is tough. He requires a credit card for the bookings and will charge a day´s rate if you cancel in less than 7 days. I got stuck because of the cancellation policy. I tried to check out after 2 nights and was told that I would be charged a penalty of one night rate for "cancellation." I knew of this policy but thought it applied to cancelling a booking before it started.

So my advice is to use this hotel for short stays or as a back-up when availability is tight.

“Decent but noisy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2005

A pleasant hostal in an excellent location, but I had the same experience as another reviewer - the staff played loud dance music that was impossible to block out. If it wasn't for the noise, I would rate this hostal higher (I was in the single/superior room featured on the website - small but fine for one person).

“Good Location and Clean, but Also Can be Noisy”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2004

This hostel is in a great location in Madrid and you can expect to find clean rooms and bathrooms. The one drawback is that the doors are loud and the sound can easily keep you up at night. Also, we were a little annoyed to find that the night staff keeps their radio/TV on loud at night - so much so that we couldn't get away from the noise, even if we closed the window. This is a decent place if you are a heavy sleeper and are traveling cheap.
