“Cheap, comfortable and very central basic hotel”

We stayed here for two nights and apart from the lift breaking down on one day (five flights of stairs is a hard walk) we really have nothing to complain about. We arrived well after 11pm but it was no problem and the guy at reception was very friendly and helpful. Our room was very tiny but had a comfortable double bed, flat screen tv (only spanish channels but that's what you expect in a hotel of this standard), good size wardrobe and a clean, compact, shower room. It is very close to all attractions, which lots of places to eat and shop close by. There is a very reasonably priced drinks machine in the lobby and free internet access. This is not luxury by any means but for the price it has to be recommended.

There are no tea/coffe making facilities in the room so take a travel kettle and some tea bags if you need this.

Room Tip: Rooms away from the front are a little quieter.

“Central Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

We stayed in this Hostal for 4 nights. It is very central and close to all the attractions. There is an abundance of restaurants and bars nearby. The room we stayed in was small but very clean and perfectly adequate for our needs. However, as our room was at the front of the building overlooking a busy street, it was very noisy and it was hard to sleep. It would be advisable to request a room at the back of the buiding. The staff had excellent English and were helpful. All in all, this Hostal was very good value for a central location. Breakfast is not available at the Hostal but there are plenty of options nearby.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back of the building are quieter.

“Friendly hotel in heart of Madrid”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 September 2011

I stayed here for 4 nights in a single room on 4th floor. The room was small with ensuite facilities. It was immacutely clean and had everything I needed. Bed was vey comfortable. The location is excellent - 2 minute walk from Puerto del Sol, loads of cafes nearby where you can get breakfast alongside locals. The staff were very friendly and helpful - particularly good to have when you're travellimg solo. They helped sort out a problem with a day trip I'd booked - nothing to do with them, but they were prepared to help.

Only downside was that the floors are wooden veneer & insulation between rooms is poor, so you can hear other guests at night - only an issue one night for a few minutes when some guests had a corridor conversation at 1am. That said - before going to Spain, I had decided to spend last couple of nights in a pricier hotel as a treat & it was much noisier. So for me the Astoria was excellent value for money. I'd definitely go there again. Highly recommended.

“Cool place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 September 2011

We originally booked a basic double room, but were upgraded to a superior double with a huge terrace- score! The balcony was big and such a neat feature. The rooms seem recently remodeled, and were clean and comfortable. It was on the 5th floor, apart from where the reception area was. The shower had about 8 water jets in it, another cool feature. It could be loud at night, not from the street noise, but from other people talking and slamming doors. The walls were really thin. The location couldn't be better, minutes from Sol and transportation. Highly recommended.

Room Tip: Room 410 rocked. The remodeled building was very nice.

“Cheap hotel close to Sol”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 July 2011

When you are looking for a hotel in the center of Madrid and you do not want to pay a lot of money than this is a good choice. A room on the street side means a lot of noise because of traffic. Take ear plugs with you. The bathroom is very small, but clean as is the room. The receptionist will order a cab to the airport. But do not keep waiting when driver is late, but go on to the street, at any time you will find a cab clos by because there are more hotel in the neighbourhood and the know when to is a possibility for earning money.
