“Old, chip, dated but with a wonderful location”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2010

Yes, it´s an old hotel. The bedrooms are dated, furniture so used and marked for long use. The walls are peeling apart like a bad apple. I stayed in second floor, and you can hear everything the other guest do or talk next door. Walls are thin and there´s no noise reduction. Not good, definitly!! But the major deminor for a hotel that charges you 80 euros a night is the completely absence of wifi, only a dirty, old and despicable computer is available in the reception.
The only thing good of this hotel is its location. A few steps from Gran via, an Puerta Del sol, close to everything!!

But would never return!

“Awful place - do not stay at this hotel.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 March 2010

Do not stay in this hotel. How it got a 3 star rating is beyond me. For 40€ a night you dont expect 5 star luxury but you do expect cleanliness. Hygiene is the very least they can do. Hotel is quite old inside..doesn't look anything special at all. It is being done up apparently. No restaurant, bar..in fact nothing but the room itself. They do have free internet downstairs in the lobby though. Staff were friendly enough until something went wrong. Checked in and left my stuff in the room and went out for the day. Was only later on that night when i went to get into bed that i noticed there were hairs in the bed! Lifted up the under sheet-hadnt been cleaned in ages! hairs everywhere. Disgusting. Got changed to a room next door. The girl who was working that night was nice about it and did her best for me in fairness but the following day the girl working at the reception didnt seem to bothered about what had happened. The manager was there the next day when i was checking out and neither him nor the girl at reception offered me any discount for the inconvenience. They didnt make me pay any extra for cancelling 4 out of 5 nights though which was good. Had checked in for 5 nights. Left the next day. Would not go back. Very difficlut to get any sleep..that was another issue. Not the hotel's fault obviously but i suppose that happens with such a central location. If you dont care about the problems i experienced then maybe its the place for you...it is very central. Less than a minute walk to the metro which takes u anywhere in the city. Awful place in general though, no character at all..very dreary. It just makes you think....what else do they not keep clean?

“Basic hotel in good location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 May 2009

This is a very basic hotel but will be the cheapest you can find in the centre if you dont want to stay in a hostel. The lift broke down once when we were staying there and we were on the top floor. Its in a great location as it is right in the centre but if your looking for an early night you will be woken up by the noise outside. There are two irish pubs right near the hotel and they are full of life at the weekend. There are great places to eat if you dont like spanish food. There is an american place near the palace which was nice and the irish bars do food which is also nice. When visiting Madrid you need to go and see the palace (it is stunning inside and out), madrid football ground which costs around €15 & retiro park which has a lovely lake where you can hire a boat and has lovely surroundings. When you arrive at Madrid airport you can get the metro from terminal 3, if you buy a ticket for €8 each you can travel on the metro for 10 journeys which is good if you want to sightsee across the city and get to and from the airport. Plaza mayor is around a 5 min walk and it is square which has entertainer, bars and restaurants. Madrid is a beautiful city and well worth a weekend there.

“Cheap and cheerfull”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2009

The hotel is cheap, the staff are helpfull and pleasant, the location is excellant, very central and in a quiet street just a few meters from the Gran Via. Within 2/3 minutes of 3 metro stations and a few minutes to Sol. This hotel need updating, the paint on the walls is about the same age as as the prado but has,t worn as well. Thats all it needs, painted, the beds were made every day, clean towells, bathroom ok, tv worked, lift worked....
ok, new curtains needed, new carpet and paint, the place needs doing up but to be honest, we didn't go to Madrid to spend time in our room. The staff were great, all speak english and we had a few laughs at my spanish. Free internet and breakfast in any one of a 100 cafes nearby. The cafe next door will give you a carryout breakfast to take up to the wife if you ask, handy place for a nightcap as well.
We enjoyed the visit but then we are really easily enough pleased.

“If you want a cheap place in the city centre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 November 2008

This hotel has a very central location, just three minutes walk from Sol, opposite El Corte Ingles, close to a subterranean public parking, one block away from Gran Via.

If you want all this and don't want to pay a fortune obviously you have to give up on rooms quality.

We've been couple of times there, and we found the worst rooms are at the upper floor where neither the lifts stops and you have to climb the stairs with your luggage; on the lower floors the rooms are slightly better, but of course there is more noise coming from the street.

The price is moderate for Madrid and basically this can be a good choice if you only spend few night hours in the hotel.
