“Grand old lady”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

This is a true grand old lady. I stayed there with my wife for a 4 night city break. We were looking for a comfortable, central hotel and found the Wellington. No disappointment at all. Sure, the hotel could do with an update ... but it's just fine as well as it is. Very clean, good amenities, everything functional and as far as we are concerned: good service. Additional bonus: the red tourist bus stops in front of the hotel, the upmarket shopping area and a few good restaurants can be reached easily on foot. We did not eat there other than breakfast, which was absolutely adequate. I definitely recommend and would return.

“Grand hotel which now needs an upgrade”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 January 2012

I stayed here with friends last year whilst in Madrid for the night. I usually stay at the Adler which is top notch, but we just needed something simple for the night and the Wellington did us a good deal. The hotel was certainly very grand in it's day. The building is still quite impressive and very well situated. The rooms are very large indeed and well furnished although a little dated now and could probably do with some upgrading. All in all though, not a bad hotel and very good value for the money for what you get and where you are.

Room Tip: The bigger rooms are enormous

“Disappointed ... Needs major renovation”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

This hotel does not deserve 5 stars, maybe once it did but no more. The decor is terribly outdated. Upon check in we were given a foul smelling smoking room, and told we should have asked for a non smoking room when we first reserved. No apologies by the lady working at the desk, just a real rude attitude. We would have left the hotel at that point, had we not prepaid the room for 4 nights.
Of course they said there were no non-smoking rooms left. So we had to endure the smoking room.
Service in the breakfast area is extremely loud. The waiters bang the plates and silverware without care for the noise they make. They seem in a hurry to clean up and close the breakfast area so they can get to the next task at hand. Clearly they need a course in hotel service and discretion. Certainly not five-star staff in the restaurant.
Worst of all of me was the dire state of our bathroom, with cracks in the marble, traces of glue to fill huge holes in the joints, just a throughly nasty bathtub.
This is barely a four star hotel. It needs a serious renovation especially of the bathrooms.

Room Tip: Make sure you stress you don't want a smoking room, if you don't want to end up in a smelly...

“Lovely old hotel in the centre of town”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

I stayed at the Wellington for a week in order to explored Madrid. the Hop On Red Bus stops at the door of the hotel. I took a two day ticket and spent the first day sight seeing and the second day I used it as a means of public transport. I also took a walking tour of the old city and I was then ready to use the subway system.

The hotel is more than comfortable and has a splendid breakfast. The only drawback was the cost of the internet in the room. There was a business centre where one could access the internet. The staff were attentive and very helpful.

“Classic, good location, service to be improved”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

GENERAL IMPRESSION: The hotel is quite classic, impressive, comfortable. A 5 star hotel had it not been for some service faults, especially with the final bill: had we not checked carefully we would have paid 100 euros that weren't due! Got no aplogies for that either.
We found a very good package offer which included breakfast and spa.

LOCATION: located in an elegant part of town, full of high class shops and beautiful buildings. It's quiet and very close to the underground that will easily take you anywhere. The Prado Museum is at a 10 minutes walk and the Retiro Park is even closer. It's not right in the city center though.

ROOM: We had a superior room, recently renovated, very charming and perfectly comfortable. No noise came from the street (quiet and with triple glass windows). But one night we heard some annoying music coming from upstairs, so the room is not totally sound proof.

FOOD: Breakfast was quite good as far as quality of food, coffee and service is concerned (scrambled eggs, sausages, salmon, ham, cheese, toasts). May be there could be a vaster variety of food to choose from

Room service was a mess: we chose to have brunch in the room and although the order was for two, they only came with one glass and cuttlery for one. The omelette was the worse ever tasted: no taste at all.

The hotel also has a very good restaurant. Dinner there is not cheap (150 euros for two) but the food was very good, the atmosphere and the service were not too formal but attentive. Careful to allergies too.

The café serves light lunches: service there is careless. We ordered sparkling water and they brought it still, I specified three times that I am celiac and must not have bread with the ham I ordered, needless to say they arrived with a dish of ham covered by bread. Worse of all the waiter said he would pull it off! I had to follow him and make sure he'd prepare a new plate without contamination of bread (which could kill a celiac, so it's no joke).

SPA: small but pleasent. The girl at the reception is very kind and willing to help. They provided a bathing suite since I had forgotten mine

hairdresser, not too kind but the outcome was professional.

SERVICE: just about sufficient but not as kind and efficient as one would expect in a 5 star hotel. This would only be a minor nuisance had it not been for two facts: I tried to hire an Ipad for one day. It took endless tries to get it working (first they said they would send it to my room, then they called back saying I had to go downstairs to sign the contract, then I went willing to pay cash but it was impossible, they wanted a credit card-although I had left one for their garantee, when they finally gave me the Ipad, I found out it wasn't working. I called back and they said they had forgotten to give me the access code, couldn't do it by phone, had to go back. I go back and they can't work out how to make it work. I get annoyed so they suggest they'd work on it and then call me back. In the end they apologized and made up for the nuisance letting me use it a second day for free). But what bothered me the most was the bill at the end of the stay: they charged us 100 euros for breakfast and another couple of things that were not due. I told them that breakfast was included in our package and proved them the other costs were a mistake too. They took them off but without apologies nor explanations of their mistake, which left us with an uncomfortable feeling and some doubts.

All in all it is a good standard hotel, in a good area of Madrid. Just check the bill in the end, don't expect very high levels of kindness and efficiency from the staff.
