“pleasantly surprised.....”

I was allocated this hotel thru last minute.com's secret hotel deal.
Upon finding out the name and reading some reviews I was expecting the worse...... but gladly that wasnt the case.
staff on arrival were very helpful, spoke good english to my pigeon spanish.
Room was fine.... not my choice of colour decoration but i'm not on holiday to spend time in my room.Bathroom was fine, excellent shower. Good location, close to 2 metro stations and also within walking distance of everywhere.
Basically its very good value for the price..... I think some reviewers have overlooked this when writing.....

“Beware”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

We stayed at this Hotel between October 4-7, 2011, and on the last day of our stay my camera equipment was stolen out of the dining room during breakfast. Upon discovering this, I immediately went to the front desk. Instead of getting a -“we are sorry, let us help you search”, they simply handed me the telephone number for the police.
I contacted my travel agent, who got in touch with the management of the hotel on my behalf, and all I received was an e-mail form letter with an apology, but reminding me that they are not responsible for items unless they are locked in the safe of our room.
If more people would report crimes in this hotel, perhaps the management would take more steps to protect their patrons like they do in other hotels within this chain. Keep your eye on the dining room staff!

“nice stay in the Madrid center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

It is starred as 4, but I shall give 3. Located in a business district, the hotel is in the good access to metro and in a short distance to every where. It is not brand new, and here and there you find the worn details, but every thing works well. Clean. Breakfast is good.

“Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 April 2011

I usually like NH hotels but this one formerly Hesperia and now managed by NH was not a very good choice. Location is ok, close to underground station Gregorio Marañon (line 10) or Ruben Dario (line 5) and some buses. Also, close to Serrano street. However the hotel is far from a 4 stars. It's so classic. Rooms are small and if you don't say anything you could finish in a room with a 135 cm bed (pretty small for these days). Breakfast is not so bad but where is Anti OX breakfast, so many advertised by the hotel? Poor variety and queues in the morning. Staff is so stressed that you ask for a boiled egg and you wait forever!! Price was good but I would not return to this hotel!!

Room Tip: My room was 805 after one change

“it is a bit of a tired hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2011

We booked this Hotel through lastminute.com as a 'secret hotel' and to be honest I have seen better.
Basically it is a bit of a tired hotel; clean, but with rough edges and staff that seem to be quite jaded.
Bad points:
Timber flooring makes for a cold un-homely feeling and is extremely irritating when someone upstairs starts dragging the furniture around at 7:30 on a sunday.

The heating, while it worked, sounded like an old car so we shut it off at night and froze.

Television was only available in Spanish. CNN and BBC were available but it was impossible to change the Spanish dubbed american programs to VO like normal digital TVs

The Location is not great for visiting the city, unless you need to take the Metro or Taxi to the centre

Good Point(s): Free WiFi - It does seem though, that it is a 512K connection shared between the whole hotel (I tested it). I only got useable service at 5AM, otherwise it was below dialup speed.

In conclusion; we won't be returning.
