“Good hotel for citytrip”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

This is a good hotel for a citytrip with friends of your partner. Very good location: only a 2 minute walk form the Gran Via, Puerta del Sol is 20 minutes, Opera 4 minutes and Plaza Mayor about 15 minutes. Friendly staff, good service. The rooms are nice and very clean. Bathrooms are a bit outdated but clean and very comfortable. The only real disadvantage is that there is in the weekends a little bit of noise from the people visiting the bars across the street.

Room Tip: Not on the frontside. There's a noise from the bars.

“Went with trepidation...”

...having read some of the other reviews, I was dubious about my choice of hotel. True the entrance from the street is less than impressive, but once inside, the place is superb, and comfortable. I can't praise the excellent staff enough - they could not have been more attentive, helpful and courteous. Our room was big and well equipped. Only grumbles, as with most hotel rooms is that the lighting was not bright enough, and the power sockets are never where you want them. The hotel is well positioned and everything you'd want to see is within easy walking distance, as are many excellent restaurants and tapas bars. A good choice!

“An odd hotel but in a good location”

Great location. Not a pretty hotel. The entrance looks like a drive way. Weirdly laid out hotel with a lobby in a room past reception. Almost hard to remember your way through the warren-like halls.

I didn't love the service. Half the people were nice. A couple people were rude, like one of the men who served breakfast. I had to stay for work for 6 whole days and some of the staff were nice and remembered me, and the breakfast man was angry with me for coming in for breakfast 10-15 before they stopped serving breakfast, saying "Everyday, everyday" in Spanish (a great way to start the day. I'm in the entertainment industry and had to be up late for film screenings and was in before closing, not after.

The rooms were huge, but very old school (with funny window treatments and not so great decor. A little spartan and not warm or well decorated. You could hear noise like others' TVs, and any staff outside, doors slamming. The lock on my room was pretty impossible to work. The internet was really spotty, which makes it hard to work. There was construction in one wing. I would stay elsewhere next time.

“Many good features!”

The Tryp Ambassador does have a note of faded elegance, but we enjoyed it alot and had no problems. It is in a great location on a quiet side street leading right down to the Opera area. There is easy access to 3 different metro stations as you are touring the city. The staff is helpful even if they are busy. Housekeeping is great and the breakfast is just the best ever...if you stay you must try to book breakfast included. We had a lovely view of the inner courtyard. I hope that the new Wyndham owners will invest appropriately in this classic hotel and it's staff.

“Very central, but old and tired”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2011

The hotel is in a walking distance from the very center of Madrid. And this is pretty much the only nice thing about this place, in need for a renovation.

The experience at this hotel ranges from "maybe-3" to "almost-4" stars depending on what side of the hotel you get assigned to.
If you find a great deal on the internet, then it's likely going to be the shabby side of the hotel: dirty carpets, rundown corridors, sad old rooms overlooking the inner walls of the building, tired furniture, two tiny beds pushed side by side instead of a proper queen size.

Avoid in summer time: the old air conditioning system in the rooms is so noisy (I'm serious, it's unbearable in daylight, but inconceivable at night) that you can't actually use it. And it's not just one room: when you switch it off, you can hear the same noise coming from other rooms as well.

If you plan for a romantic getaway in Madrid, this is probably not where you want to be, unless you make sure you book a super-superior room, or get lucky. According to other reviews that I read, someone did find some nice room in this hotel. Lucky you!
