Eight of us (4 pairs) stayed at the Husa Moncloa in October. On arrival at Airport from Liverpool we walked to Terminal 4 along covered walkways with lots of horizontal escalators – 10 minute walk. At Terminal 4 go to manned ticket-booth at bottom of steps to obtain a travel pass for required no. of days – very reasonably priced. You can access the Airport’s Metro stations from Terminal floor. The train leaves after every five minutes from 6 in the morning to 2 in the morning. Line 8 (Blue) goes right to the new Nuevos Ministerios Metro at the heart of Madrid, a journey of only about 12 minutes. At Nuevos Ministerios change to grey line for Moncloa. Hotel is 200m from station. Couldn’t find door to Husa Moncloa but then realised that access, lobby and check-in desk is shared with Husa Princess next door. Had a bit of difficulty at check-in – mix-up between Super-Breaks and hotel. Four double rooms as booked not available had to settle for two doubles and two twins. We had a twin which was excellent because each single was like a mini double and adjacent to each other. From the foyer you walk along corridor to the Monclea. All the facilities are shared – the bedrooms at the Moncleo may be less plush but they were fine – wouldn’t wish for anything better really – clean, spacious, nice furniture, TV with international news channels but mostly Spanish. Breakfast was excellent – wide choice of all kinds of food, hot and cold – all you can eat, basically. Nice foyer/bar facilities. Next door to hotel is a Starbucks which is excellent for coffee and snacks and the staff understand English pretty well. The location is excellent – you can access all parts of the city easily via Metro. Internet facilities available in foyer – we had to pay 3 Euro for 45mins access – guests staying at Princess may have had free access, not sure about that. Make sure that you don’t leave any tickets, travel documents etc lying around in room – our maid was too efficient - one of the group had to find her in another room to ask her for his Metro ticket. Our return boarding passes also disappeared and so we had to use the internet to print off fresh copies! Not a lot of restaurants in the vicinity – you’ll have to use Metro to go to city centre –lots surrounding Plaza Mayor if the weather’s fine. Most Museums closed on a Monday, which is a bit of a nuisance. Didn’t have time to vist the Prado but did visit the Reina Sofia on a Monday –saw Picasso’s Guernica. Also visited the Bernabeu stadium – guided tours about 23 Euros, free wandering tours about 16Euros. The Retiro park is very nice – big boating lake and lots of activities, especially on a Sunday. Husa Moncloa excellent for a city break or extended stay – best deal I could find was with Superbreak – worked out at about £80 per night per person, including breakfast.
