When we return to Madrid, we will definitely be staying at Hotel Moderno. The location literally cannot be improved. It's located overlooking Sol plaza. Sol is the heart of the city and you can walk everywhere from here. When you come out of the Sol metro, you can see the hotel - which was great because I was exhausted from the overnight flight and it's the worst when you wander around a foreign city unable to find your hotel.
Because of it's location - and because Madrid is a VERY late city - I was pretty concerned about the sound, but the our room (3rd floor, which is really the 4th floor) had such fantastic sound proofing that we didn't hear a thing.
The rooms are quite spacious for a eurpoean hotel. Our room (and possibly all the rooms) had a gorgeous balcony overlooking the plaza and Calle de Arenal. The shower could not be improved in any way. Hot, great pressure. :-) Oh, also, there's a bidet... which is either awesome or awkward.
Another great aspect of the hotel: the service. The people at the front desk were incredibly helpful - they had great recommendations for reasonably priced restaurants. Also, they were great about setting up our transportation to the airport with no problems. Additionally, the cleaning service was thorough and prompt, which is always nice.
Other random notes: The area is super safe, even for a young woman travelling/walking around alone. There is free wi-fi during the day, but it cut out around 7pm. Breakfast, if not included, was $10 euro (which is expensive for desayuno in Madrid). There is a bakery (called La Mallorquina) with the BEST naplitanas (it's a pastry with cream or chocolate inside) right next to the hotel. You must go there. Really, just do it. You'll understand afterwards. You'll lament the fact that you ate the whole thing and want to go back for more. Do that, too. :-)
