“Excellent Location and Service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

When we return to Madrid, we will definitely be staying at Hotel Moderno. The location literally cannot be improved. It's located overlooking Sol plaza. Sol is the heart of the city and you can walk everywhere from here. When you come out of the Sol metro, you can see the hotel - which was great because I was exhausted from the overnight flight and it's the worst when you wander around a foreign city unable to find your hotel.

Because of it's location - and because Madrid is a VERY late city - I was pretty concerned about the sound, but the our room (3rd floor, which is really the 4th floor) had such fantastic sound proofing that we didn't hear a thing.

The rooms are quite spacious for a eurpoean hotel. Our room (and possibly all the rooms) had a gorgeous balcony overlooking the plaza and Calle de Arenal. The shower could not be improved in any way. Hot, great pressure. :-) Oh, also, there's a bidet... which is either awesome or awkward.

Another great aspect of the hotel: the service. The people at the front desk were incredibly helpful - they had great recommendations for reasonably priced restaurants. Also, they were great about setting up our transportation to the airport with no problems. Additionally, the cleaning service was thorough and prompt, which is always nice.

Other random notes: The area is super safe, even for a young woman travelling/walking around alone. There is free wi-fi during the day, but it cut out around 7pm. Breakfast, if not included, was $10 euro (which is expensive for desayuno in Madrid). There is a bakery (called La Mallorquina) with the BEST naplitanas (it's a pastry with cream or chocolate inside) right next to the hotel. You must go there. Really, just do it. You'll understand afterwards. You'll lament the fact that you ate the whole thing and want to go back for more. Do that, too. :-)

Room Tip: It's quiet, but higher up might be better for very light sleepers.

“Nice people, best location in Madrid”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 December 2011

We spent 14 days at the Moderno, the staff is most friendly, you can walk to all the main sites in Madrid, lots of nice restaurants and bars close by. Will surely return there on my next trip.

“Right in the heart of Sol”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2011

The hotel is in the middle of Puerta Del Sol. Next to Burger King. So central that we kept returning to the hotel a few times a day to rest our tired feets or put down our shoping bags. We stayed on the 6th floor in a modern double room with a large terrace overlooking the main square of Puerta Del Sol. Nicely furnished room with clean & bright bathroom. Good & attentive staff too. They can even remember which room you are from.

The Metro station 'Sol' is a few steps from the hotel (look for the exit 'Mayor'). Very convenient. You can also walk to Plaza Mayor in 5min, Gran Via 5-10min, Real Palace 10-15min. El Corte Ingles mall is on the next street to the hotel (close at 10pm).Lots of shops & restaurants near the hotel so the area is always busy & crowded. Not a worry if you come back to the hotel late at night. Must try the Hot Chocolate with Churros at this place near the hotel called "Chocolateria San Gines". It is voted the best in Madrid. When you come out of the hotel, head right, past San Gines church, turn left on the next small alley on San Gines street.

If you're heading to the Barajas airport, take the Cercanias train from Sol. The Cercanias station (look like crystal fish) is on the opposite side of the square next to the Bear with Strawberry tree sculpture. From there, pay Euro 2.15 per person from Sol to T4. Buy tickets at the automated machine. Take Cercanias train Line 3 to Nuevos Ministerios (1 stop, 4 minutes). Then go up the escalator and make your way down another escalator to another platform for Line 1 to T4 of Barajas Airport. Make sure you take the Line 1 train to the airport Terminal 4. A few other trains leave from this same platform. This takes less than 30min.

Would definitely stay at Hotel Moderno again for its great location.

“Great staff and great location”

The Hotel Moderno staff was extremely helpful, especially Santiago ("Santi") Bello Gonzalez-Echenique, the manager. Santi gave us excellent suggetions about where to go, how to get there, and where to eat. The rest of the hotel staff was also very professional, helpful and friendly. Many spoke good English. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The breakfasts were very good. The location is great, if you want a central location in Madrid, with most attractions in walking distance and with a major Metro station one-half block away. An exceptional value for our family vacation.

Room Tip: Exterior rooms have amazing terraces and balconies, where one can watch the busy streets below. The...

It was our first time in Madrid and wasnt sure were anything was.
We followed the instructions from the airport and got there on first go.
We couldn't be happier. It was in the center of Madrid, you hardly need to walk two steps to nearest shops, bars and restaurants.
The staff were really nice and pleasant.
Always there and helpful if you need recommendations or directions.
Easy access.
The rooms are basis but very nicely decorated. Plain bed, nice bathroom and a wardrobe for coats. A tv in the bedroom and a nice balcony from where we could look onto everybody on the street. Double glazed doors so you couldn't here it all while sleeping.
A good experience for my couple, my 2 year old and me!

Room Tip: If you like to see the movement of people on the street and don't mind a wee bit of noise it'...
