“Convenient and well-run, but sadly lacking in atmosphere”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 May 2007

Despite being slightly obscured by a (thankfully under-used) petrol station, the HN Alberto Aguilera certainly looks the part – a modern eight-story hotel that dominates a corner on Madrid’s busy Calle de Alberto Aguilera. Only 25-30 minutes from the airport (an evening journey, I might add) the hotel occupies a convenient location, being served by an abundance of taxis, and only a short stroll from the nearby ‘Arguelles’ or ‘San Bernardo’ Metro stations.

The rooms are of an excellent standard, and appear to be regularly (and thoroughly) maintained. The only drawback is the paper-thin walls and proliferation of wooden floors, which meant that, during my stay, the tip-tapping of high heels and the dull drone of a wheeled suitcase could be easily heard from the floor above, not to mention the amorous couple in the room next door! Annoyingly, the “double” bed comprised two single beds shoved together, which kind of took away the point, but nevertheless, the mattress and pillows were very comfortable.

Wi-fi is available in all of the rooms, but sadly (and all too commonly) at an extortionate cost. The mini-bar was well-stocked with a variety of products – at least for the first night that is. On a number of occasions, I had to ask for it to be re-stocked (with water, I might add – nothing stronger!). This was slightly annoying as it led to some confusion as to what items I had taken that day and what items had still to be re-stocked! Nevertheless, this was swiftly resolved by the very efficient staff, and the itemised bill at the end of my stay seemed to add up correctly.

Breakfast was served in the someone soulless restaurant (the views obscured by that bloody petrol station again!), although a wide range of hot and cold buffet items more than made up for it. I never actually tried the restaurant in the evening, so I cannot vouch for the atmosphere at that time of day, although the bar always seemed somewhat under-used and it closed very early for a hotel. Overall, I would say that the three stars awarded to this hotel are pretty much justified. The hotel is a little rough around the edges perhaps in places, but overall I enjoyed a very satisfying stay at a convenient, well-run establishment.

  • Liked — The cleanliness of the hotel, the choice of breakfast buffet items, and the staff at the front desk.
  • Disliked — The noise from adjacent apartments, the soulless atmosphere, and the delay in re-stocking the mini-bar.

“Ok the first night but noisy the second”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2007

I stayed in the Alberto Aguilera for 2 nights on a business trip. Overall it was just OK. The plus sides are it's in a good location, plenty of shopping on the door step and a Metro station a 2 minute walk away, the staff are friendly and helpful and the room was small but the bed was comfortable.

On the downside, the restaurant is tiny and has a cold atmosphere the first night I ate there on my own and the second night I was one of only three people. The menu is very small, only a choice of 3 starters and the same for main courses. The room was, as I said, small but very noisy! The second night I spent in the hotel I got very little sleep because the couple next door were talking which was so clearly audible that it woke me up and kept me awake!

I will try to find another hotel in Madrid the next time I travel there purely from a sleep perspective.

My room was small, there were big damp patches on the ceiling BUT the bed was comfy, the bathroom clean and spacious. It was just a general ok!

“Very good value”

My daughter and I stayed five days at the NH Alberto Aguilera and were quite pleased about it.
The exterior looks some neglected but when we entered everything was OK.
We booked a standard room so it was a little small but cozy. The beds are very confortable. They have pillow menu, so you can ask the pillow you want. Everything was spotless. The bathroom is very nice, with a good variety of toileteries and an excellent shower.
The location is perfect, with good restaurants and shops. There´s an Opencor round the corner where we could buy everything we needed.
The metro is four blocks from the hotel, in front of El Corte Inglés.
We coud go walking to Plaza España and other interesting places.
Buffet breakast wasn´t included in the price but it´s worth to pay for it.
The front staff isn´t always well informed and sometines gave us wrong informations, as when we asked about trips to Toledo.
