“Wonderful place!”

My oldest son (15) and I went to Madrid for the last week of June 2011. I wanted to stay at a hotel a little closer to the city center, but becasue I had Marriott points and they just acquired this hotel we decided to stay here. The hotel is GORGEOUS and very non-Marriott hotel looking. It is an old masion that was also once an embassy, but is now a lovely small high end hotel. The staff was extrodinary (went over and above each day from arranging our dinner, taxis, room requests etc), our room was perfection and the upscale neighborhood that it was located in made us feel very safe to walk no matter what time of day or night.

The food is crazy expensive ($45 for breakfast for one), but we found a small cafe less then 5 minutes walk away and ate their every morning and ate lunch and dinner in various places in Madrid depending on what site seeing we were doing that day.

The walk into the downtown area every morning was easy (about 10-15 minutes) and we only returned to the hotel in the evenng to get ready to go out to dinner. There are 2 really good restaurants taht are a 5 minute walk where we ate twice. Each night we took a taxi back to the hotel because while it is only a 10-15 minute walk, we had walked all day and were tired.

I would definetly stay there again!!

“Great...in most ways”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2011

Beautiful old estate, picturesque, and a healthy walk to everything. Great front desk but no concierage level. Only a few speak English which had us curious--since the marketing of the spot came up my Marriott email. Although the European way is to have long enjoyable meals, I think 45 minutes without a waiter in sight is an extreme. But food was good :).
Rooms nice. Neighborhood stellar. I'd consider returning, but I better remember my iPhone to translate everything again!

“Overrated”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2011

Used Marriott points for 2 rooms for 2 nights, so I can't complain about the cost, but definitely not worth the going rate which I understand is over 300 euros per night, per room. Rooms adequate in size, but nothing special. Upon returning to the hotel after midnight the first night, we found the air conditioning in one room was not working. Another room was provided, but we had to pack up and move ourselves with no apology or compensation such as a complimentary breakfast. Even when working the ac was working it was barely adequate. Because my wife is Platinum with Marriott she was entitled to a free breakfast each morning which she did not use. I had one cup of coffee the first morning (no one came around with refills), but because I was not staying in my wife's room (I was with my son and she was with my daughter) they insisted I pay 8 euros for the coffee. Eventually a manager intervened to say there would be no charge. Overall the stay was a disappointment.

“Gorgeous Old Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2011

Hotel was at one time an embassy residence, the old charm and details remain. Rooms tastefully decorated and renovated. Service was very good, quality bed linens and very comfortable bed. Location is not directly in the center of town but it is walking distance in a beautiful neighborhood filled with foreign embassies.
