“Lovely!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

Nice rooms and comfortable beds after a long day of travelling. We didn't have food in the restaurant but the hotel is right beside Calle Laurel which was perfect and there are lots of nice bars and cafes on Calle Portales. Only bad thing was the view..a wall as we where at the back of the hotel but everything else was great! Would recommend!

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the front of the hotel if you want a good view

“Pole position for foodies”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 September 2011

This is a lovely, smart, modern hotel in the old town, big room, comfortable bed, spotless bathroom, big work desk (with free hi-speed wifi), minibar with water, soft drinks and beer: very nice indeed. Best of all is the location. The view from my room (603 - right next to the lift!) was a pretty paved square below with trees and statues of pilgrims (it's on the Camino de Santiago) in front of a very grand building, with cloud-capp'd mountains in the distance. The hotel only does room and breakfast, but just around the corner there are streets and streets of tapas bars, cafés and restaurants, including the famous calle Laurel, and the local pizza joint will deliver to your room if you don't feel like going out. At €80 a night it's not particularly cheap compared with other hotels I've stayed in in Logroño, but the location makes it worthwhile. Although it's only three star (because it doesn't have a restaurant or bar) I'd say that the rooms are pretty much to four-star standard. I would definitely stay here again. Only two beefs: shower over the bath doesn't have a grab-handle for when the bath becomes slippery wth soap, and the breakfast is very unambitious. I solved the latter problem by going round the corner to the Noche y Día cafetería, where a cafe con leche and a large brandy gross up to €3.80. Barmaid is very attractive, too, like a younger version of Amanda Redman (that's quite enough of that. Ed).

Room Tip: I always ask for a room near to the lift. They obliged

“Good choice in Logrono”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 July 2011

This was my second stay during San Mateo at the Hotel Portales - and I've already booked for this year! Hotel is relatively new and quite clean. Staff at front desk were very friendly. The room itself was quite large with a good amount of shelf space in the bathroom for toiletries. The bathroom had a nice mirror for makeup (or shaving) and both a toilet and bidet. The closests have mirrors on the doors and a nice mini refrigerator inside. Room also has 2 wastebaskets (one of my personal "quirks") - one in the bathroom and another in the bedroom. Location of the hotel is very central to sights and the main tapas streets on and around Calle Laurel. It was a little noisy at night but this was specific to the festival and the location of one of the main bandstands which was right behind the hotel with music until 3 a.m. I don't think this would be a factor during a normal week.

“great location for a tapas tour!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 June 2011

Nothing special about this hotel but clean, very good location despite the fact that it might be hard to find but thanks to other reviewers, we found our way thru the pedestrian street, which you might think that you can't drive there. The hotel has a very good location for visiting old town with Calle Laurel and the surrounding streets with loads of tapas bars, where you can from one to another, having some of their specialities, some have shellfish, some mushrooms and so on. Great fun and very good food for a moderate cost. The hotel itself isn't something to talk about really but it's alright and not expensive. The breakfast is ok, nothing more, and the hotel has their own parking garage and you get the car in there by a elevator! Don't expect anything special but the hotel is ok for a day or two in Logroño.
