“Apes and all”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 February 2012

I stayed for 2 weeks at the Rock in October. A hotel with a good reputation which was once the best hotel in Gibraltar. Not any more, whilst the location and views are good the hotel has a run down feel.
The decor and furnishing verge on poor and dirty and the service is not up to standard.Lack of menus in the bar leaves one guessing at the choice of drinks and food available. The buffet breakfast is OK but the service is muddled and slow.
To add to this the apes are a nuisance verging on a menance. The balcony of my room was filthy with their paw prints and clearly had not seen soap and water for months. They enter at every opportunity through open windows and management do not warn guests of this. You can come out of the bathroom to find an ape pinching food if you have left the window open. They can also be quite aggressive. The carpet of the room was dirty and sticky underfoot probably in part due to their incursions.
I sat on the Wisteria terrace one day and heard the complaints of other guests. One couple had waited 2 days to be moved after complaining about a water leak in their bathroom. One had tried to arrange a birthday treat but the staff seemed unable to comprehend the request.
etc etc.
Fortunately I had booked at a reduced rate but if the full rate had been charged I would have been requesting a large refund. The Hotel is apparently due for a multi million pound refit when I dont know. The sooner the better.

DeartripbugUK, Thank you for taking the time to write a review, which naturally I read with some concerns. I can certainly concur that the Rock is an old building in need of attention and I am happy to report that the entire hotel will very soon be subject to a multi-million pound investement programme. I am totally lost as to the comment regarding bar food choice as there are literally menus and a cocktail list on every table in the bar, the terrace and also the lounge! There are many caveats around the hotel, including guest bedrooms and balconies, regarding the apes and the cautious approach required. Regarding our inability to arrange a birthday treat, obviously I cannot categorically deny that this was the case but in my experience this is an element of guest care and attention that we are very proud of at the Rock. Notwithstanding this, please accept my apologies for the fact that we did not quite hit the mark for you during your stay.

“Very noisy but otherwise good”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

An average stay. Room okay but could do with a makeover. The view was wonderful but the level of disturbance from the staff directly outside our room was relentless and completely unacceptable. For this reason, an otherwise very good hotel gets an average review.

Dear Jane H, Thank you for taking the time to post a review. I was concerned to read that your stay was marred by noise from our staff. This is quite a rare comment and I can only assume that the noise in question eminated from either a housekeeping office or from our maintenance team who have been working on a number of rooms at various points around the hotel. Either way, this is totally unacceptable and the departments concerned have been spoken to. I hope that should you contemplate returning to Gibraltar, you will give the Rock another chance and that we can prove that this shortcoming isn't typical. You may also like to know that later this year the 'makeover' that you refer to will commence. Please accept my apologies.

“A pleasant way to escape the British winter for a few days”

We were very happy with the hotel. The staff were polite, courteous and also friendly. Our room 414 had a small balcony with a view overlooking the busy busy bay, a great place to watch all the shipping. At one time we were joined by a barbary ape, who quietly passed a few minutes grooming himself, posing for pictures before continuing on his way. They are wild but so long as have no food and don't hassle them they won't hassle you, remember to lock your balcony door though, they are inqusitive! Our room was comfortably furnished, not massive but the bed was huge! The shower although not powerul was hot, we never had an issue with hot water. Wifi reception excellent. Nice touches included sherry on arrival, good quality tea and cafettiere, biscuits replenished daily for your room. A fridge if you needed one. One odd omission was no room safe. Recommend the mediterranean steps as a great way to start a walking day, also world war II tunnels interesting, also if you get tired of walking, hop on one of the very frequent buses, they are free :-)

Room Tip: Ask for a balcony, not all rooms have them but they all have sea views.

Dear jamesosborne, Thank you for your review, which obviously made disappointing reading. I apologise for the fact that you did not totally enjoy your stay. Your comments about updating the hotel are well-founded and indeed as you can read elswhere in these forums we are doing just that during 2012. Regarding the food, I wonder if there may have been an issue of personal choice here as generally speaking our food is well received by our visitors and locals alike. That said I am sorry if you felt that choices were limited. Thank you.

“A wonderful stay (despite some complications)”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

The Rock Hotel is a truly stunning building; imminent refurbishment will further enhance its quality. The position with amazing sea views is perfect (quite a steep walk up from town, but there is a bus if you don't feel like the walk).
My bedroom was immaculately clean, and all the staff were very friendly.
I was dissatisfied with a meal in the bar but my complaint was effectively resolved. I had no telephone service throughout my stay, but my complaint was sympathetically received, and I was allowed a free call from reception.
Wi-fi access (at nil extra cost) worked superbly well throughout my stay.
Great that the hotel provides some 'smoking permitted' rooms.
Aware that I should lock the balcony door at night, to prevent apes intruding, I duly did so;an ape arrived on the flat roof by the balcony one afternoon but went after I yelled at it; the next day, another ape -or perhaps the same one - actually came into my room and landed right by where I was sitting whilst working on my laptop. It grabbed a packet of biscuits and left, after I shouted at it. Moral of the story: keep the balcony door shut even in the daytime!
Breakfast is plentiful and varied - although curiously, the prime tables by the huge window have the chairs facing away from the view (easy for one to re-position to capture the vista!).
I just loved the Rock and will certainly return. I had such a relaxing time: undisturbed sleep, in such a truly lovely building. Plenty to do and see in Gibraltar; friends had told me that half a day was enough there but this was so wrong!

Room Tip: If you need wifi access, be sure to say so; my room (126) was brilliant for wifi but I gather some r...

Dear Perpetualtraveller, Thank you for your generally positive review and your kind scores. The laspe in our telephony system was a bi-product of a telephony upgrade that we are undergoing at present which will give us new, future-proof communications cabling prior to our hotel refurbishment later this year. I was glad to read that we had a practical solution to the problem and I was glad to read that you availed yourself of our complimentary wi-fi during your stay. I do hope that you do manage to return to Gibraltar and the Rock Hotel in the not too distant future. Thank you once more.
