“A potential firetrap. Lots of hazards.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Should the fire happen in this place people will die. I am surprised to find that the premises like this are allowed to operate. The hotel main exit/entrance are obstructed with tables/and chairs which are piled for storage. Some doors when open completely block passage from other rooms. The interior corridors are poorly lit, some sections are on-self timer that goes off after a few seconds leaving one inside a pitch-black corridor. Most door frames are low, people above 180cm WILL bang you heads into a door frame. The are lost of tipping hazards with poor lighting and many hidden steps.

Rooms reeks of cigarette smoke. Towels were not replaced from the previous guests.

There is a late bar on the flow below the rooms, so you will hear loud people till late at night.

Sound insulation is not existent. You will hear every step at the adjustment rooms and corridors,

Stay elsewhere.

Room Tip: Stay elsewhere if you can.

“Fading fast...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 December 2011

I stayed here a couple of years ago because it suited my budget. It was then, quite faded and in need of updating but offered a warm welcome and clean, basic accomodation with a good, hearty English breakfast.
A recent visit revealed the same hotel, with a very surly "welcome" which was uttered without the guy on reception even bothering to look over his glasses at us. The hotel is now even more faded, but is very, very grubby as well. Breakfast was very insipid, just like the watress who served it, after announcing that the"wegetarian" breakfast consisted of the English breakfast without the bacon and sausage, which left a cold fried egg, beans a few mushroom slices and two tomato slivers.
Budget hotels have their place and generally, you get what you pay for, but in this case, the single star displayed outside is looking as faded and grubby as the hotels interior.

Room Tip: Try another hotel !

“Please be aware!!!! This is not the place to stay if you have any standards.”

If it had not been that our spanish friends had booked and paid for this hotel in advance, then i would have walked out within minutes....The bathroom had just had bleach slung around it, the top cover of the bed was so stained it was unbelievable and the towels, well i can say no more...... the breakfast was passable (i think) but once i had looked at the cutlery tray i could'nt eat another thing there, my god, i cannot believe some of the good reviews this hotel has had in the past.....yes it was cheap, as i later found out but there has to be some basic standards, not here though. I never found any of the staff particularly friendly and i dare not venture into their bar after initially booking in.....i have stayed in many hotels (reasonably priced) and many hostels (much lower priced than here) and i hope i never experience anything like this place again. Sorry but it has to be said.

“Its better then the reviews suggest.”

Having recently stayed here for three nights on a visit to Gib i can say i was happy with the hotel and the service provided. We stayed on a bed and breakfast and had the private bathroom. The rooms are basic but comfortable. The room we stayed in had a double bed and a single as well with and ensuite bathroom. It also had a tv with various channels and a desk area. The room could do with a lick of paint but it was not dirty. THe communal area in the bar was cosy and the garden terrace area was a nice place to have a drink after climbing all over the rock. The bar prices were probably the cheapest in Gib. £1.50 for a glass of wine. The breakfast was basic cereal and a cooked breakfast which was cooked on request. There was also coffee and tea as well as juice to help yourself to. The main selling point for this hotel is its location. Its just off main street and smack bang in the middle of town. Its really central for the nightlife and easy to access both casemates square and ocean village or the cable car station for the rock making it easy to find everything you want.
I will say if you are looking for a luxury break or trying to impress your partner then this is not the hotel for you, but if you want a clean central location for a base to see Gib which is value for money then this is the place for you but please be realistic you get a level of luxury for the price you pay, if you want a posh pad stay on the bigger hotels with more stars.

Room Tip: There are no lifts so if you are taking large amounts of luggage ask for a room on the first floor...

“HAPPY WITH WHAT WE GOT FOR OUR MONEY”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2011

Having read all the reviews I can well understand why some people did not like their stay at the cannon hotel but my wife and I got value for the money we paid, our room was clean, the food was ok and the service was good, we feel that some people want four star hotels for 20 odd quid a night, the cannon hotel is for real people who want a good cheap getaway if they want all the frills then go to monaco not gibraltar which is now only a booze and fags paradise and although we love the place it needs to get its act together quick or it will only be the spanish who visit but back to the cannon hotel thanks Paul for the service and good laugh cheers

Room Tip: go for a room with a bath
