“Great clean hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2009

Accomodation good value and clean. Reception on 4th floor - lift available - we had a triple room ensuite for 75 euros. Beds were comfortable and shower fine - we had a spacious balcony in front with garden table and chairs as well but weather too wet to ernjoy

It's about 10 minutes walk from the train station, which is also a drop off point for bus from airport, just follow roadway to left, cross road around garage and straight up street - this will cross CAlle republica and the hotel is a little on right. Its 10 minutes walk to the centre cathedarl area. Break fast is extra and next door in the cafe which was fine

“Unbeatable Value for Money in Santiago”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 June 2009

It's not in the city's tourist centre, but if you're travelling to Santiago for business on a budget you can't beat the Hostal Mexico. Clean, well-appointed rooms - welcoming if a bit dark - a short walk away from the railway station and about 10 minutes on foot from the heart of Old Town. Convenient coffee and fizzy drink vending machines in lobby, with a comfy common room where one can sit and work in natural lighting as an alternative to one's room. Two supermarkets across the street for a variety of room snacks, and a great many small cafés and bars nearby. But, perhaps best of all, free and fast WiFi access - the invaluable tool many other Santiago hotels just don't provide. And if you have time to relax, the hotel offers an advantageous deal with a Spa located a short walk away.

“Good option for Santiago”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 October 2008

Comfortable rooms with nice beds, not really any noise at night which is certainly positive. Only basic ammenities provided.

The location is quite good; about 10 minutes from the heart of the city (up a slight hill).

Air conditoning works well though it is controlled from the reception so you have to ask them to set it --bit weird (but not a big deal)!

Parking cost 8 euros and was pretty convenient.

We paid for breakfast which was located at the cafe next door -- not very fancy at all though, pretty much just a pasty with coffee and juice.

Great price as well, so I would not hesitate to stay here again (we have stayed twice).

“Take slippers with you!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 May 2007

It was an overnight stay in Santiago and the hotel was adequate. The only thing i can criticise it for was the lack of a hair-dryer in the bathroom, and due to the wooden panelling on the floor i advise to take slippers with you so you can relax at ease without having to worry about walking on a cold floor, but that´s all down to personal preferences. The room was spotlessly clean, and the bathroom provided showercap, shampoo and shower gel. We had a room at the front of the hotel, and it wasnt that noisy and the blinds brilliantly blocked out any light from entering the room in the morning! But once again they are adjustable down to personal preference. It looked like the hotel was undergoing refurbishments, but since we stayed over at the weekend there were no building noises that we could tell, and our room looked like it had a newly installed air-con, it was still sealed it was that new! At time of booking if you request a double room (and are expecting a double bed) then make sure you specifically request it because otherwise they might try to give you a room with twin beds, as is what happened with us. Otherwise, it was an enjoyable stay, the staff were friendly and very helpful. Maps and tourist info was available at reception.

“You pronounce it Me-hee-co”

We were slightly unsure about booking this hotel when nobody had reviewed it before on here. It turned out to be a very good budget choice, located about a 10minute walk from the old town. The area was fine and had the advantage of having some very reasonably priced bars and eateries in the vicinity. A special mention here for the nearby El Jardin bar and restaurant where we were treated to excellent tapas with every drink and Joseph the waiter was delightful to us, even though we are English, in fact, because we are English!
But more of the hotel. It was located on the upper floors of a commercial building. Reception was on the 4th floor. No-one spoke much English, but everything was fine anyway, We got the rooms we asked for and they were spacious and spotlessly clean. The bathrooms were well equipped with shower as well as bath. There was satellite TV and radio in all the rooms. The rooms at the front were slightly noisier than the ones at the back, but there was no air-con and the ones at the back got very warm during the day.
There were plenty of supermarkets nearby and a 24hr store across the road.
As a short break destination, Santiago was charming. It had everything you want; lovely cathedral and old town, affordable food and drink and no mass tourism. Plus it felt very safe and laid-back. Just go!
