“Really nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2010

I stayed at Virxe da Cerca for 3 nights in a business trip. The hotel is 10 minutes walking from the cathedral and it was built in the XVIII century .
The staff is very friendly and the rooms clean and comfortable. The bathroom was not very big but it was comfortable as well, with lots of soft towels. The bed, the pillow and the peace and quiet of the place helped me to rest a lot. The breakfast is served in a nice glass refectory in the tiny little garden, it was nice but I missed some fresh fruit.
There is free internet available in all the hotel.

“A very good centrally-located hotel with top-class facilities”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2010

We were pleasantly surprised by this hotel, as it is one of the few that truly met its description and services. Located in an old monastery in the centre of Santiago de Compostela, it has been tastefully renovated and modernised, with the accommodation and facilities located around a large central garden/park area. The double room we were in was located on the side street that runs along side of the hotel, and noise wasn't a problem. There is small, pay parking area just behind the hotel (accessed from the side street) and there is another, cheaper, open-air parking area at the bottom of the side street. Free Internet access is provided and is very good. The bed was large and comfortable. The bathroom was sizeable and contained a bath, a shower (located over the bath), a toilet, and a bidet as well. Hot water was always available. The bathroom lacks fan ventilation, as do most European hotels, but there was a sizeable window in the bathroom that could be opened for good ventilation.
The supplied buffet breakfast was excellent, with a huge range of breads, pastries, tea, coffee, juices, fruit, bacon, eggs, cold meats - and it is served in the large breakfast room which overlooks the garden area, making for a restful meal. The breakfast room is very quiet and peaceful, and the staff unintrusive. Overall the staff here are very good, and the service excellent. Most of the staff spoke quite good English, which is very helpful to those of us with poor Spanish skills.
The only downside to this hotel was that the bar is located in the centre of the hotel, and is a smoking area - and one needs to traverse the bar area to travel between rooms and reception, and between rooms and the front door. As non-smokers, we were annoyed at having to breathe in large amounts of used smoke every time we (unavoidably) had to traverse this area. The owners would be well advised to move the smokers to the outdoor, garden area, to meet modern requirements.

“Quaint lovely hotel across street from city center”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2009

Quaint hotel with cozy, romantic rooms across street from city center. Had good restaurant. Ideal if you prefer smaller cozier hotels.

“Beautiful hotel, great value for the price”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 July 2009

This was the most comfortable hotel we stayed at during our trip, and also the least expensive. You have the option of booking a room in either the modern or historic sections of the inn. I originally booked a room in the historic section, not realizing that it was more expensive. (A double in the historic section is 95 euro, while a double in the modern section is 70 euro. I don't think the price difference is made clear on the online booking site.) However the hotel was very gracious in moving us to the modern section when I explained that we were grad students on a budget. And our room in the modern section was elegant, spacious (included its own sitting area) and very comfortable. We asked for an additional bed (20 euro) and I think it may have been a real bed rather than a cot. In any case, it didn't collapse in the middle of the night, which is more than I can say for other additional beds that we requested on this trip. The interior of the hotel is beautiful. It has wooden floors, exposed deep red brick walls, and a small cozy bar area. Our room faced the courtyard, and we had no problems with noise. I think all the rooms in the modern section face the courtyard. In our determination to avoid paying for a parking garage, we parked the car in the residential neighborhoods behind the hotel. It's a substantial (and steep) uphill walk, so worth dropping off the suitcases first. One word of caution, which has nothing to do with the hotel: Galicia is famous for its seafood, but make sure you ask the price of absolutely everything before ordering. We inadvertently ordered a massive lobster that ended up costing about the same as my dining room table (minus the chairs).

“Great hotel - full of atmosphere and history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 July 2009

We stayed at the hotel for 2 nights in July. As soon as you walk though the door from the street it’s like entering another world – dark wood, atmospheric lighting, antiques – just what I had hoped for.

We booked a historic room (in the main building) and were lucky enough to be lodged in room 104 which looked out the back of the hotel over the pleasant gardens. Being the end room it was slightly larger than the others as the bathroom was behind the lift shaft giving you more floorspace in the bedroom. The room also featured an enclosed balcony with 2 armchairs and coffee table – a great place to sit first thing in the morning or last thing at night and enjoy the view of the park in the valley below or the buildings on the other side of the small valley.

The room was well equipped with a small lcd tv, plenty of toiletries and minibar. The bathroom was traditional with great towels though the shower rather basic but hot with good pressure.

The staff were always extremely pleasant at both reception and in the cafeteria where we had breakfast on our final morning. Reception staff also had a very good command of English and were helpful and efficient.

As far as noise is concerned, there are several bars in neighbouring buildings. Some disturbance is to be expected, so pack some earplugs. I think you’d be hard pushed to find a hotel in the centre of the city that isn’t affected in this way.

I would have no hesitation in returning to this hotel.
