“Sunshine after rain”

Spent two nights here after a few days on the coast. We had not seen blue sky whilst on the coast but once we reached santiago it brightened up and we had two great days.
Our room was fine..nothing grand but you are not paying grand prices. Good view over to the cathedral, less than a 5 min walk away. Who would want to be in the heart of the old town anyway?
Agree with other reviews..breakfast was not much to be desired in a featurless celler...
would stay there again.

“Friendly & Well-Located - If Somewhat Noisy!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2006

We stayed at the Hotel San Clemente mainly because of the low off-season prices and because a lot of the other hotels in town are closed during January it's the month when most hoteliers take their annual holidays apparently.

While not actually in the Old Town, the hotel isn't really in the New Town either. The Rua San Clemente, on which the hotel is located, actually runs into the historic area, so everything is incredibly close by and easy to find.

We had a room on the middle floor of the hotel. It was neat and clean and generally very pleasant for a 2 star hotel. I don't think that the room itself could have been improved upon.

The main problem with the hotel, really, is the thinness of the walls. We could hear every word of our next door neighbours' conversations. It could have been really annoying if they had been noisy people, or night owls - but happily in this instance, they weren't.

I wouldn't recommend the buffet breakfast at 5€. It's okay (bread, cheese, churros, coffee, fruit, etc) but lots of cafes have breakfasts for roughly the same price and a much better atmosphere than the somewhat dull breakfast room/lounge at the hotel. Also, the same round of cheese and plate of meat pate appeared every morning - and the sliced cheese had a little bit of mold on it!

All in all, though, the Hotel San Clemente is a very well located budget hotel (we paid 60€ per night) in the off-season. I think that it might be a bit noisy in the summer, though, when all the rooms are full!

“Eye to the sky”

We stayed at Hotel San Clemente in February 05, part of the Pousadas de Compostela group, which includes several two and three star hotels. I would recommend it.

Our room was pleasant - up in the roof with a view across rooftops to the cathedral. We were not in the old town, but I suspect that's not such a bad thing during the busy warmer months when people are wandering the streets at late hours. The hotel is, however, only five minutes' walk from the cathedral. It's an old town house, gutted and "hotelised". Our room certainly retained some old charm with its stone walls and beams across the ceiling. It was nicely furnished and clean (although needed a good dust) and the bathroom was spacious. The communal areas were not as characterful but were still very pleasant. There's a courtyard at the back for warmer months.

The staff were friendly and welcoming, although it seemed unfair to me that Sunday morning's attendant was organising breakfast, doing reception AND cleaning the rooms on her own. Maybe that's the off-season ... ------
