“Sunset boulevard - washed up!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 January 2012

last minute booking, used to go late 90's - we flew from Amsterdam for sunny break
great architecture
lovely environnment
lovely older people working there, younger ones less interested
slightly more expensive than other nearby hotels; no pool, no air con, shocking breakfast
staff have changed, family run, bad manic service at breakfast, stale food
overpriced cocktails that are awful and use pre-mixed elements
this year bar and garden dead at night
rooms cramped, sweaty, old, could be called romantic if being generous
feels like Sunset Boulevard film set. decaying, dated, and over the hill.
used to be a big favourite but in 15 years the service is worse, breakfast the same, and i think the son or nephew of the family running it clearly sees it as a money spinner without investment.
our shower kept runnig hot and cold and some nights no hot water at all; when asked about it the young guy Junior(?) said "it is a busy night for you boys in the hotel"
dust under the beds
terrible beds, plastic lined, hot and OLD!

Room Tip: not street facing. cheap rooms you share a bathroom and loo. what is this 1950?

“Romantic yes, falling apart, sadly yes.”

Good spot in town but can be noisy, but this is Sitges! The hotel has a great atmosphere with lovely outdoor breakfast in the garden. The three buildings are stunning with lovely ground floor reception and bar area. However that's where the romance stops.
Terrible old beds, flaking paint off ceilings and walls, broken shower attachments, cracked tiles, exposed wires and nylon pillows covered in ripped and badly fitting pillow cases. Plastic mattress protectors are excusable but mattresses covered in historic stains aren't. No air con except some top floor rooms but I'm not a big fan of a/c anyway but some nights would be useful!
Breakfast is processed square meats, cheap cheese and non branded cheap cereals. Along with UHT milk, and rolls in packets with dates on amounts to a poor breakfast.
Ask for fresh crusty bread and you will get some! Unlimited coffee is good but it's poor powdered coffee.
All in all a tired 'institution' of Sitges but with year on year price rises and deteriorating accommodation, this really isn't a great stay anymore. Other local hotels are upping their game with upgrade of facilities, all this hotel has got is new lampshades, seat covers and signage.
Could be amazing, as some of the staff are adorable, the buildings stunning and nice surroundings and building. But that's it.

Room Tip: Only one with ensuite bathroom, and ideally garden facing at the rear as these are slightly less noi...

“Nice quiet hotel & good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2011

Decent place to stay, good value & in a great location in the town. Staff were friendly & helpful. The only downside is the lack of air con - so it all depends if that is something you want or not. Having breakfast in the lovely garden every morning was nice.

Room Tip: Try and get a room overlooking the garden

“Romantic, not really”

Standards have dropped since my first stay in 1993.
The current management is living off a reputation established by a different team who did know something about hospitality.
The hotel is mismanaged by a family who are quick to tell you that they know best what their paying guests want from the hotel but who never invite comments from their guests.
Employing kith and kin is a recipe for disaster in the hospitality sector - the employees run the hotel to suit themselves, none seem to have had formal hospitality training and it shows.
If they could upgrade their breakfast offer it might go some way to restore consumer confidence.
The breakfast team will bring a basket of cheap stale bread to your table as you sit down. You won't want to eat the cup cakes sweating in their plastic packaging, stamped with a six month sell by date, full of preservatives and fake colourants to make them look somewhat appetising.
The yoghurts are similarly fortified with preservatives. The fresh fruit cocktail is from a tin - in sunny Spain, imagine serving tinned fruit in a country considered the fresh fruit basket of Europe.
The orange juice is a disgusting concentrate from the cheapest local food store. Fresh squeezed juice can be purchased at the bar, along with decent fresh coffee, these should be standard offers at breakfast.
The staff are friendly. The breakfast team work very hard in bringing bad coffee to your table. I'd prefer to see them work smarter.
The management should install a self service coffee machine for guests to go grab a coffee when they are ready for it rather than having bad coffee going cold whilst you eat the meager breakfast offer.
Fools and their money are easily parted - don't spend your cash here unless you want to be treated like one. It's my seventh stay but alas my last time to visit Hotel Romantic.

“Excellent and relaxing stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

Have just returned from a two-week stay at the Romantic. Absolutely enjoyable and relaxing.

I have been to Sitges many times, but had not stayed at this hotel for many years. If you are looking for a hotel with air conditioning and flat-screen tvs (or any tv!) this is not for you. If, on the other hand, you appreciate being in historic buildings lovingly and personally restored, with extensive and eclectic collections of art and artefacts you may love it.

My room was simple, but very good: facing the entrance street, and very quiet at night and with very high ceiling and comfortable large bed. Room was kept spotlessly clean by excellent cleaning team.

One of the high points of this hotel is its garden, where breakfast is served. It's a wonderfully relaxing place to start the day, and enjoy the very nice breakfast buffet.

The staff are gracious and welcoming (thank you Manuel, Miguel, Jose, .....).

The bar is a beautiful area serving drinks at very reasonable prices - it's a pity more people don't seem to have discovered as it must be one of the "gems" of Sitges. The sister hotel Renaixenca, just across the road, also has a great little bar operated during the summer months. James can organise a superb Bloody Mary!

And, by the way, putting on my technophile hat, the Romantic has excellent and free wi-fi throughout the hotel.
