This hostal is very conveniently located, across the street from a Metro station (Urquinaona) and within easy walking distance of Las Ramblas and Plaça Catalunya. Less than one block away is an Open Cor grocery store (open until very late). El Corte Ingles department store is located about four blocks away. The hostal staff was very helpful before we arrived and throughout our stay. The hostal is officially in the "1er piso" (first floor), but it's actually in the third level.
We stayed in Room #5, a clean triple room with a two-burner stove top (no oven), a small refrigerator and a small balcony facing the street. It was enjoyable having the balcony for watching people and traffic, but the room was a little noisy even with the balcony doors closed. If you have difficulty sleeping with some noise, you may want to ask for an interior room. Also, you can also feel the trains from the Metro as they pass below, but the trains stop running around midnight (except on Saturdays when they run through the night). None of us were affected by this noise, however.
We drove into Barcelona (this was one of many stops on our trip) and parked at an underground garage (named Urquinaona) one block away from the hostal. Although it was very convenient, this garage was also very expensive. If you need parking in the area, do some research or ask the hostal staff for other alternatives. If you're only going to Barcelona, you do not need a car. The Metro is very clean and efficient. T-10 Metro tickets (good for 10 trips by multiple persons) are the best buy for visitors.
