Our apartment for 3 persons (Fontanella 15, third floor, living room, bedroom, kitchenette, bathroom- I think this aparment is called La Ramblas 1 bedroom apartment) had an excellent location, steps away is Plaza Catalunya and La Rambla. Apartment was clean and seemed new. Kitchen was equipped enough, plates, cutlery, cups, glasses, 2 pans, a large pot, 1 small pot, toaster, kettle. There is a fridge and electric stove (4 plates) and oven. Living-room is associated with kitchenette, there is a table and three chairs. In the lounge is a sofa, large LCD telly and a third bed. Between the living room and bedroom is a door.In the bedroom 2 beds. Entrance to the bathroom is both from the bedroom and also from the living room. There is a shower, not bath. The bathroom has a large mirror. There is a mini-balcony (in the living room and bedroom), there is an ironing machine and a small safe, which is free. There is wifi, but we did not use it, we had no laptop. There is air conditioning. The first day they gave us the keys, (we wrote text message to our contact that we have arrived, waited on us in front of the building), the 4th day they came to replace towels and linen and kitchen-towels. There is a small elevator. There is no reception. There is a big noise from the street, but when we closed the windows and turned on the aircondition, it was OK.
The area is very expensive, we had a pint of beer first night at La Rambla, it was 9 euro. but you can find normal prices as well. (small bottle of beer for 1,80 euro, which I think is normal.) We bought a metro-ticket for 8,25 euro for 10 journeys, but did´t use it really, we were walking a lot, it is easy to reach most of the sights by foot. Next to our apartment was a tabacs shop. The nearest supermarkets are Carrefour in La Rambla and the opposite direction from our deparment Bonpreu at Carer dÁusias Marc, I think. Can of Estrella or Don Miguel is about 0,7 cents. We usually eat out, but sometimes we cooked, 700 gr of chicken cutlets are for about 4 euro, potatoes 1,50 euro, mixed salad 1,50 euro, oil 1,25 euro, 6 eggs about 1 euro. We cooked breakfast every day (sausages, fried eggs). Baguettes are for about 0,6 euro. For a quick snack, you can have a hamburger at McDonalds for 1 euro. (they have a beer for 2,50 as well, a small one). And a funny thing: we didn´t know what is tapas, which you can get anywhere. Tapas is snack:) so it can be anything you choose.
As I said, our apartment had a wifi, but we have not had laptop, so I used public internet. I could not find any in the area (but possibly they are there) so I went to Gran via de les corts catalanes (long avenue), 40 minutes of internet is 0,50 euro.
We had a special experience. We went to see a bull fight (corrida de toros), because we thought it will be only an exhibition, without killing the bull (as we heard a long time ago, that it is prohibited.) how big was my shock, when actually they killed the bull... it was awful, I left the arena immediately. Afterwards I learned that the prohibition of killing is from 2012 in Catalunia. But, if you are after a special experience, the cheapest tickets are about 24 euro, at Plaza de Braus Monumental, it is nearly every Sunday. Be aware, it is really brutal. Other days you can go there to have a look, entry is 6 euro, the building is really nice.
Other thing, with the metro: From the airport we took renfe train to Saints, then we were lost, how to get to Plaza catalunya.... so if you get off the train, go upstairs, look for the red M sign, so you change for a metro. We didn´t know this, so we went by train direction Blanes (or any other from platform 8) just one stop.
If you want a trip to Madrid, the cheapest option is overnight bus, from Estacio Barcelona-Nord, you can buy a ticket from automat at ALSA. Return ticket is about 60 euro.
We went to montserrat as well, from Plaza Espanya, look for a metro sign with orange sign attached. You can buy a ticket to montserrat at the metro station from automat, we went to monistrol and changed there to the cremarella train (return ticket 23 euro)
