“If you can stand noise, would fall sleep anywhere... stay here”
I stayed here during the Sonar days in June 2003 (but can't select that option); anyway, Barcelona is always crowded!
My opinion might seem a bit outdated but, as I can see from other reviews, it hasn't changed much, except for the fact that you could choose the size of the dorm. Now seems they accomodate you where it better suits them.
I was in a 8? persons dorm room (I remember there were 4 "cubicles" in my area, then 2 to each side, maybe there was some extra...). When I seen the place well, I was 6 years younger and didn't mind THAT much, still looked very crowded. Had to climb to my "bed" (just a space with no mattress, just a linen and a separation from the next "space" where a couple was staying). There were 2 other "spaces" down there. There were curtains but was really uncomfortable. You would feel bad of just doing your stuff as any noise surrounded the place, and clubbers were sleeping or stuff... Some people didn't mind to speak at their phones at full volume though.
Sleeping quality... NOT. Not only it was very uncomfortable but expect noise at all times of the day. I was several hours inside there due a food intoxication and was unbearable. I fully understand people has to do their things, but that place is not prepared to have a quality sleep or rest; just to crash in to fall asleep if you're extremely tired (because it's not comfortable to sleep in a hard surface) or if you're one of those persons that can sleep in any condition.
There were lockers outside the room (for rental at that time - don't know about today). I did leave my stuff in there, because seemed that there was any control on the people who were coming in and out the place, and the Gothic area is not known for its safety...
The bathrooms deserved only a quick and functional visit. Always overcrowded. I had food intoxication during that stay (those fresh unwashed strawberries from the market, I think...) and always felt rushed!! Horrible. But felt "at home" at the bar just in the corner with Vía Laietana, there was a very nice Andalucian girl, who recommended me a mint tea and gave me a "Buscapina" (for stomach aching) :)
The breakfast was quite mediocre, so much that only took it one day. Preferred to pay 3€ or more for something more consistent than that. Also, seemed they weren't restocking.
Staff was so-so, just correct, but seemed quite stressed out.
I would look for somewhere else if going on budget to Barcelona again.
