“Cozy loft bed hostel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 December 2011

This hostel had really awesome rooms with curtains and ladders to the beds which gave the beds a really nice level of privacy for big dorms. The rooms are air-conditioned which was key for the August heat. Free breakfast served on the rooftop patio was nice and full of fresh fruit. The lounge-common area wasn't so great and you can't hang out in there past midnight - not sure a big deal because there is plenty to do around the hostel. It's in the old town really close to the awesome beach. Staff not super helpful.

“Good place to meet new people”

A good hostel for young people, close to the sights, most of the staff were great. The rest of the travellers were all similarily minded.

“Not a bad hostel, but beware a few things...”

The Above Average:
I stayed at this hostel and really like the atmosphere, the people staying there, the staff (with a few exceptions I´ll detail below) and the location. All of those things were great and in a city like Barcelona atmosphere and fun people make for an enhanced visit since it´s such a social place. If you´re a free spirit and friendly you´ll have fun there, but you can also have a great time at any hostel if you´re this personality. It just seemed very easy at Gothic Point. The bathrooms\showers were numerous and consistently clean. Some rooms even have their own half bath. Be sure to ask for a room with tall bunks and curtains around them (and a half bath) as not all the rooms have this and it´s the same price as the other rooms with standard, open bunks and no bathroom.

The Mediocre:
The breakfast was just okay although I did appreciate the fresh oranges. The kitchen is tiny, grungy and the fridge was bursting at the seams so if you like having a place to prepare and cook food then it´s disappointing. Also the internet (wi fi and their own computers) didn´t work for 3 out of 4 days I was there... and you have to pay for it when it does work. There are many other hostels in Barcelona that offer free unlimited internet and wi fi.

Proceed with Caution:
The few things that I´d prepare you for is the party atmosphere which means bring earplugs and wear them to bed if you plan to hit the sack before 2am. On the other side of that is if you enjoy late nights and in Barcelona late nights are standard with bars only opening at midnight and not busy until 2 or 3am then this hostel is great because you don´t feel bad sliding into your room so late.

The Worst:
Beware the night staff who is actually one individual in particular who was there every night I stayed there, maybe he needs a night off to relieve his anger, I don´t know. But he was aggresively mean, with no tolerance for someone remaining in the chill out areas after 11pm even if they wanted to read a book. Essentially there is no place at this hostel to hang out if you don´t feel like hitting the bars\clubs or getting into bed at 11pm. For me this was a breaker (as well as lack of internet) and I left for another hostel after 4 nights. I was craving comfortable couches, a place to play cards and have some beers until either going out or bed time. There is no need for a staff member to yell at someone and chase them away from what is an essential part of any hostel.

Here´s the best part: chances are you will love Barcelona no matter where you stay!

“Good spot but don't count on a good night sleep”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 September 2010

The location of Gothic Point hostel is absolutely perfect, you can stroll to Las Ramblas, the port, zoo and many other locations. The beds were uncomfortable, it was really noisy and the air conditioner didn't work very well which is the middle of summer in Barcelona is a massive pain. The staff were great and willing to help, the breakfast was fairly good and filled us up for the day.

If you're going to stay here bring ear plugs to block out the noise.

“If you can stand noise, would fall sleep anywhere... stay here”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 February 2010

I stayed here during the Sonar days in June 2003 (but can't select that option); anyway, Barcelona is always crowded!

My opinion might seem a bit outdated but, as I can see from other reviews, it hasn't changed much, except for the fact that you could choose the size of the dorm. Now seems they accomodate you where it better suits them.

I was in a 8? persons dorm room (I remember there were 4 "cubicles" in my area, then 2 to each side, maybe there was some extra...). When I seen the place well, I was 6 years younger and didn't mind THAT much, still looked very crowded. Had to climb to my "bed" (just a space with no mattress, just a linen and a separation from the next "space" where a couple was staying). There were 2 other "spaces" down there. There were curtains but was really uncomfortable. You would feel bad of just doing your stuff as any noise surrounded the place, and clubbers were sleeping or stuff... Some people didn't mind to speak at their phones at full volume though.

Sleeping quality... NOT. Not only it was very uncomfortable but expect noise at all times of the day. I was several hours inside there due a food intoxication and was unbearable. I fully understand people has to do their things, but that place is not prepared to have a quality sleep or rest; just to crash in to fall asleep if you're extremely tired (because it's not comfortable to sleep in a hard surface) or if you're one of those persons that can sleep in any condition.

There were lockers outside the room (for rental at that time - don't know about today). I did leave my stuff in there, because seemed that there was any control on the people who were coming in and out the place, and the Gothic area is not known for its safety...

The bathrooms deserved only a quick and functional visit. Always overcrowded. I had food intoxication during that stay (those fresh unwashed strawberries from the market, I think...) and always felt rushed!! Horrible. But felt "at home" at the bar just in the corner with Vía Laietana, there was a very nice Andalucian girl, who recommended me a mint tea and gave me a "Buscapina" (for stomach aching) :)

The breakfast was quite mediocre, so much that only took it one day. Preferred to pay 3€ or more for something more consistent than that. Also, seemed they weren't restocking.

Staff was so-so, just correct, but seemed quite stressed out.

I would look for somewhere else if going on budget to Barcelona again.
