“Would definitely go back”

While there was much to like about Hostal Opera Ramblas, the best thing was its location. Being just a couple blocks from the activity of the Ramblas as well as a subway station was a great convenience in seeing the city. We also loved that it was close to the huge food market where we could pick up a meal or some snacks for the day. The hotel is plain but clean and has a spacious business center with a computer for hire plus nice tables in case you take your own technology. There was no TV in our room, but there's a large one in the community area. We really enjoyed having use of the elevator for transporting our luggage or just for avoiding the stairs after walking all day. Front desk staff was reserved but very well informed and helpful. If you want to sightsee rather than hang out in a hotel room, we recommend Hostal Opera Ramblas. Note re Barcelona in general (or any other large city)....take every measure to protect yourself from pickpockets. If you don't know how, google it. Hotel staff can also make suggestions.

“Pay the extra cash for a hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 December 2011

We arrived after a very long flight from Los Angeles to Hostal Opera hoping for a quiet, clean and comfortable place to leave our things and feel safe in at night while we rested.... this was not it. The rooms are ancient... the photos on their site are misleading. The bed was old and probably full of bed bugs... the bathroom was the best part of the room. And although you expect a lot of life in the surrounding areas (you are at Ramblas after all) the tiny alleyway the hostal is located in is full of interesting characters... loud people and leaves you with a very uncomfortable feeling. We walked down Ramblas and checked out one of the hotels. The room was clean and much more comfortable and quiet so we quickly cancelled our stay at the Hostal and moved our luggage and ourselves to Hotel Arc de Ramblas. Much better and only 20 more euro for the night.

Room Tip: Anywhere else but here.

“No frills, but ensuite bath, wifi, and top location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 December 2011

Will only corroborate what others have written for the most part. Would definitely recommend Hostal Opera Ramblas for people just looking for a clean, safe place to sleep while spending most of their time out in Barcelona. Located right by Liceu Metro station on the Ramblas. Near La Boqueria outdoor market. I had a single with private bath with a window looking out onto the inner courtyard/air space. Quiet, didn't hear neighbors. Furnishings are as others have described; like a college dormitory room. No TV, but wi-fi worked for me. Stayed here once before about 7 years ago; still holds up now. Only negatives are that they will charge you in full for the first night once you make your booking (theoretically refundable) and will want you to settle your final bill the night before your departure.

“good value for monie”

we were 8 girls in Barcelona, renting an apartment who turned out to be horrible! after the first night we were wondering the city trying to find a decant hotel who is vacant enough for all of us, and that was Hostal Opera.
the hostal is located in the best location - right in the middle of La Ramblas, the best street in Barcelona, close to the Gothic quarter, restaurants, bars, shopping and other tourist attractions.
besides the great location, the hostal is pretty clean and safe. breakfast is not included but who needs it when you are so close to the Ramblas?!

“No first choice”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 November 2011

We stayed at this hotel from oct 25 till oct 29 2011. Though we had (in our reservation mail) expressly asked for a quiet room not next to the elevator, we were given a room next to the elevator. They didn't even bother to inform us by mail that they coudn't comply with our demand. Furthermore: there was some working going on in the hotel, so the first morning we were wakened at 8 o'clock by heavy drilling in walls. Apparently they didn't want to wait till a later hour, when all the guests would be gone into the the city.
Our room at the first floor (room nr 106) had had one window, which was heavily barred (so there was no escaping along that way in case of emergency) and there was no daylight in the room since the window came on a very small (6 m2 ??) and very high (5 floors?) empty patio.
On our last day we had to leave the room at eleven o'clock (which is quite normal), but since our plane left in the later afternoon, we wanted to visit Barcelona once again and we asked if we could leave our luggage in the hotel until 13h00. We were told that this was indeed possible, but we had to pay €2 for this. Which was not very customer friendly, since we had to pay 4 x €63 for our stay.
In conclusion I would not advice this hotel as a first choice: apparently one isn't seen as a guest, but more as a milk cow whose wishes for a stay are completely ignored.
