“Compact, but all there”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 November 2011

We just had one night in Barcelona and the Hotel Zenit was perfect. The rooms (and elevators) are very small, but make excellent use of space. The bar and restaurant were fine and the location offers other dining and drinking choices, as well as ATMs, drug stores, etc. I found the staff to be friendly and helpful. Part of the reason I selected Zenit was that it seemed close to the port and we were getting on a cruise ship the next day. I was a bit taken aback to find the taxi ride was nearly 20 minutes and the price pretty high. If you want a great downtown location with a reasonable price and good amenities this may be the ticket, but it is not close to the port . . . and perhaps no hotels are.

“Great place to stay”

Slightly off the beaten track. Metro close by and within walking distance of placa de catalunya. Had very pleasant stay in hotel. Plenty little bars in area- very reasonably priced for wine and beer. Would definitely go back to this hotel.

“A bit out of the way and with UNRELIABLE Air-Conditioning”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2011

This is one hotel that is let down by its location and the misleading way (for those unfamiliar with Barcelona) its proximity to major tourist attractions is decribed on-line. It is quite a walk to take the bus which takes you to La Rambla and the nearest metro is not near by any stretch of imagination.
The hotel itself is efficiently managed. The people at the front desk during the daytime are pleasant and informative, though they are often too hard pressed to attend to you promptly.
The rooms are clean, well-maintained and comfortable.
Where the hotel really falls down is its air-conditioning system. Zenit seems to have some rule for turning off the air-conditioning halfway through the night. But this is not so bad as when the air-conditioning fails. Our last night (24 September) was particularly miserable because the air-conditioning was non-functional from the evening itself. When we complained about this problem in our room (No.405), we were informed the air-conditioning had failed for the entire fourth floor, that the night-staffer at the front desk was not an air-conditioning mechanic, that he did not know how to get hold of one and that, therefore, there was nothing he could do for an entire floorful of distraught residents. The weather was hot and opening the windows let in street and traffic noise. The hotel made no effort to change the room or give a rebate for this extremely uncomfortable experience. We shudder to think what staying in this hotel would mean in the peak of summer.

Room Tip: Get a room where the air-conditioning works i.e. NOT on the fourth floor.

“Outstanding location, clean, decent place. Friendly staff.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

Have stayed twice over an 18 month period, and I have always found it to be pleasant. Nothing really bad to say. Sounds from the other reviews though, that you should be cautious and double check all your booking details!

Room Tip: Most rooms have very bad views of a central grungy courtyard. Expect it.

“Beautiful hotel, has earned its 4 star rating!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 August 2011

We booked this hotel as it was close enough to bars, clubs and restaurants but not too close to be kept up all night by the noise. At first sight, we were very pleased as the hotel has been decorated to a high standard and the receptionist could speak a good amount of English to assist us with any queries we had. We asked if it was possible to get a terrace and the receptionist said yes. We were put in room 704 which was on the 7th floor (either top floor or 2nd top). I would recommend this room highly!! The terrace alone was massive!! And had no other terraces above it, so you were guaranteed sun all day long. The room was nice too, everything you would expect...big bed, bath, shower, mini bar, safe, TV, etc. The bed was quite annoying as it was 2 singles together so if you want a cuddle during the night you have to pick one single bed to lie on or you will both end up in between the beds! Also, to keep my water cold I had to take all the hotels items out the mini fridge and put them back in before leaving as there wasn't enough room for both my stuff and theirs. Plus no kettle to make your own tea, but there is a restaurant in the hotel that does breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Myself and my partner walked to La Rambla, this was just over an hours walk. Walking there was ok but once on La Ramlba we got a bus that takes you back to Avenue Diagonal (10 minutes away from the hotel). We just asked someone at a bus tours desk and they told us where to get this bus.

In terms of bars and clubs, we took a while to find some. In particular, we were interested in cocktails. There was a place called Oli En Un Llum which is a cocktail bar and this was great. Bar staff were very attentive and done beautiful cocktails. We found directions to this place in a leaflet called BC Night 2011 found in the hotel. Another good bar we found was La Sede, this was very friendly bar and the cheapest we had found at 7 euro 50 for 2 vodka's and coke (far cry from 16 euro which we had paid in one place). It also got quite bust around 12 o'clock which was good atmosphere.

Back to the hotel, one thing that I found annoying me was how early the cleaners came round, they chapped the door every day at half 9 and if we put the sign outside to tell them not to we were still woken by them standing outside our room talking to each other for a good 15 minutes. However, in saying this, if we left the room for a few hours and changed the sign on our door asking them to clean it, it was always done by the time we got back. So this makes up for it. Also, they were very good at cleaner the rooms, always left them spotless!

All in all, we had a very good stay and would highly recommend this hotel. What I would say is that the locals told us that August is the quietest month of the year in Barcelona, especially the week from 11th to 18th August so maybe pick a different month to go on. Either way, you will not be disappointed with the hotel!!! We weren't.

Room Tip: Ask for a terrace if you want this, we did and they were happy to assist.
