We stayed 4 nights in the Caledonian for a city break in Barcelona. Excellent location - 10mins walk from Placa de Catalunya. Friendly and helpful staff (English speaking). Rooms clean and had almost everything we needed (would have liked a kettle!). We had a room at the back of the hotel and it was very quiet. Didn't have breakfast but there were plenty of cafes near by to have a coffee and pastry on our way to the day's sightseeing. Close to metro (Universitat) so easy to get there from the station (and airport). Would stay there again and would recommend it to anyone doing a similar trip.

My husband and I stayed here our last 2 nights in Barcelona. We had previously stayed in the Barri Gotic and wanted a change of scenary. We really enjoyed this hotel because it was in a different area. The best part... large room and king size bed! It was the largest bed we slept in while in Europe for our honeymoon.

Caledonian is a good, basic 3 star hotel which is perfectly located for a short city break. It is in a very safe neighbourhood, just beyond touristy areas, near the Universitat metro station. Therefore it is easy to get anywhere in the city. Infact, almost all the attractions worth visiting is within walking distance. Places like Plaça Catalunya, La Rambla or Passeig de Gracia (where two Gaudi houses are located, along with many designer shops, for those who are interested!) are all just a few minutes walk away.

The room we stayed in was simple but very clean and comfortable. It was overlooking the inner courtyard and was very quiet. There was a mini bar in the room and a flat screen TV which only showed local channels. Bathroom was also very clean and comfortable.

Although they did not create a big issue for us, I have to mention a few negative points as well. Breakfast definitely needs improvement. The most basic item on breakfast was scrambled eggs but it always took some time to replenish the small tray! There weren’t sufficient eggs even for 3 tables having breakfast at the same time. Beds are really hard, not the most comfortable I have ever slept in. Hallways had a very heavy smell of smoke. It seems that the hotel is not serious about the "no smoking" policy.

Overall: If you are looking for luxury or want to be spoilt by comfort and a wide range of hotel services, go somewhere else. But if a simple clean room, a clean bed, a clean and comfortable bathroom in a safe place, which is at the same time very conveniently located is what you are after, book your room at Hotel Caledonian. You will not regret it!

We had a very pleasant stay at Hotel Caledonian and may return if we visit Barcelona again.

I am currently in the Caledonian. My room is airless and stuffy with a window that opens into an internal shaft so no breeze enters. Rooms have air-conditioners but apparently they are deactivated outside mid-summer. I and other guests are lying in bed sweating but staff can do nothing to help. As far as I'm concerned the claim on the website that each room has "AC and climatización independiente" is a lie.
