“Las chinches (bedbugs)”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 October 2011

Title says it all. The rooms are nothing great, and after our first night we found 2 dying bedbugs in the room in the morning. There was also a mysterious mattress with disheveled sheets in front of our door in the morning (eww!). Since we didn't get any bites I assume that the bedbugs entered our room from the mattress left outside in the hallway (I am insanely paranoid about bugs and I checked everywhere the night before - including under the mattress for telltale signs of the critters). I understand these things happen, but the staff were not very helpful. Luckily I had my Spanish dictionary because the guy at the front desk had no clue what a bedbug is (luckily he understood "las chinches!" and finally started to half believe me after I showed him pictures). They then let me go up to the room to show the manager, who didn't speak one word of English (luckily I speak Italian very well and can understand, though responding posses a bit of a problem sometimes). The manager told me it was "impossible" for there to be bedbugs because they fumigated the place for them less than a week ago (this guy was quite furious about it). When I showed him the bug, his reaction was clear - chinches. After some arguing and even accusations that we brought the bedbugs in on our shoes (we were wearing sandals, ha) we left and went to a four star hotel. We still had to pay the full amount for our one night there, despite the inconvenience. I really would not recommend this place - you're better off staying farther away from the city center at a nicer and cheaper hotel and just taking the clean and efficient metro into the city.

“Great location! Front desk - rude!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

I stayed at this hostal for 3 days with my daughter on September 2011. The hostal is in a great location, very close to Las Ramblas and Plaza Real. The decoration is nice. The rooms are small!
but I found the rooms to be quiet eventhough being on a busy street, the next door restaurant is very good and you get a 10% discount when you stay at this hostal.

The first day we stayed in a room with a balcony to the street, small, the bathroom door could not be
closed as it had been water damaged, the air conditioning was not working. So i went downstairs to the front desk, they send the guy to fix the air conditioning but could not do it until the next day, they provided us with a small fan, small consolation as the room was very hot! I also mentioned to the service guy that we could not close the bathroom door as it was damaged and he said "well you do not need privacy is it is for the two of you"... excuse me? i thought this comment was odd.
I am wondering how come they could not have fixed this before?
After I took a shower i found out why the door was damaged, the water from the shower was running out to the door and sink and I realized that the side of the shower stall was also falling apart.
Obvioulsy we wanted to change rooms. So I went downstairs again and the guy told me he could give us another room the next day. The next day we were moved to a bigger room and everything was working. The Spanish guy at the front desk was nice, but the other guy an east indian guy was
extremely rude and unprofessional!!

The hostal was nice, but sometimes you will have air conditioning in the free wifi lounge and sometimes not! they claim you can have internet in your room but it never worked You have to pay 1 euro for 25 mins to use the internet in the hostal, and you have to pay to call outside because you
have no phone in your room.

There was an incident at the front desk which this east indian guy was extremely rude, shouting to
all the guests, so i complained, but until now I do not have the name of the manager unfortunately.
That day I complained to this guy, he told me he was the manager, which I realized after that he
was not!

The breakfast was not good at all, the coffee was horrible, the juice was not good, they only have
white bread and some crackers, maybe the yogurst was OK.

The only thing good was location!

I do not have pictures as my camera was stolen, be careful lots of pick pocketers!

Room Tip: Rooms in the back seemed to be bigger and quieter.

“So So...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 September 2011

Stayed 2 nights in twin room, 2 night in double room.

Located 6 mins walk from Liceu metro.
Good location near La Rambla, Mercat San Boqueria.
There's a Carre Four nearby and you can walk to Placa Catalunya.

Staff not overly friendly.
Rooms seem a little unkept. Shower curtain has a bit of mold.

24 hr reception. Security is alright.

Cafeteria next door is good to try a paella n has a few drinks.

“What a great little place”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 August 2011

Looking somewhat like a small shop, the entrance to the hostel is deceptive and the the place is much bigger and nicer than first impressions.

Although this is listed as a youth hostel it is much more of a hotel; nice, private rooms with ensuite etc, though there are some some dormitory style rooms available on the upper floors.

All rooms seem to be equiped with efficient aircon and there was no extra charge for this during my stay. The room itself was a twin bedded double room with ensuit bathroom with shower. Not the lagest of rooms and not a lot of storage space for two people but very comfortable, nevertheless. Maid service was very good standard and the room was cleaned daily with clean towels provided every seond day.

The staff are english speaking and friendly and happy to give any information or help to tourists. Breakfast is buffet style and provides a variety of the usual rolls, toast, ham, cheese, yogurts etc in a nice, comfortable dining room. The bar next door gives a discount to patrons of the hostel and the food is really good.

The street outside is extremely busy with foot traffic until the early hours and so rooms on this side of the hostel can be a little noisy but this is offset by these rooms having a balcony! I did get a good nights sleep every night there, although there were just a couple of occassions when youngsters were running about in the early hours.

There are no tea/coffee facilities in the rooms but there are small kitchens on each floor available to guests. Water can be bought very cheaply, (60c) from the local Spa shop - just two minutes away on foot.

A great location from which to explore this fantastic city, would definitely stay there again.
