I had the Pleasure of staying at the W Barcelona from Feb. 10 - Feb. 13, 2012. We were a group of six consisting of 3 couples of varying travel experiences. Every single person in the group fell Absolutely in LOVE with both the City of Barcelona and the W!
Staff: I must start this review by complimenting the Wonderful, Fabulous staff at the W. Every person that we came into contact with was friendly and efficient. I thought it was absolutely fascinating that very few of the W's employees were actually FROM Spain, so I took the time to ask about their journeys to Barcelona, and we were always treated to interesting, fun conversations. Truly, everyone was great, but My personal favorites were Moses (France/Senegal), Francilia (Argentina), Wan (China), Alex (Brazil), Yusef (Spain, actually LOL). I was also very impressed by the Wonderful woman at the Concierge desk who took special care to explain where to go, where to eat, and took care of our every need. (I'm so sorry that I didn't get her name, but she is the lady at the WHATEVER desk with the beautiful curly hair!). We also Really loved Joey, the Lobby DJ (from Chicago). Each of these people made our trip Very special and I THANK THEM for making us feel at home!
Atmosphere: We traveled in the middle of winter, so we didn't get to experience the pool/beach, etc. But, the entire hotel's cool vibe and trendy atmosphere made us want to come back in warmer weather. During the day, our group split up to explore on our own, but we all came back together in the evening for "Happy Hour". After long days of walking and exploring, it was Wonderful to come back "home" to the W, have some drinks and relax.
Location: Absolutely stunning location on the beach/boardwalk. It is a bit of a walk into the main sections of Barcelona, but the walk is well worth it. Barcelona itself is a beautiful city and it was lovely to explore on foot. We did take occasional taxis back to the W at night and the cost was never more 9 euro.
Room: We had a Fabulous Room on the seventh floor and the name is quite Appropriate! From the moment that I walked in and saw the stunning view of the boardwalk, the city and the beach, I knew I was in love! The hardest part of the first night was tearing ourselves away from the window seats and actually leaving the room. The bed and the shower, like in all W hotels, are Simply Heavenly also! Although I did enjoy the ultra modern furnishing of the room, I will admit that the all glass doors on the bathrooms may be a bit disconcerting for friends traveling together.
Food:
1. The only meal that we didn't absolutely love was the Continental Breakfast at the Wave restaurant. The price of the meal did not reflect the true value. After the first meal at the Wave Restaurant, we discovered that the Wave Bar has a light breakfast menu and we ate every other morning meal there. The food was MUCH cheaper and much heartier. I Highly recommend the Egg sandwich served with bacon and cheese! They also offer omelettes, pastries and other selections.
Dinner at the Wave restaurant made up for ANY disappointment felt at breakfast. Every meal was beautifully prepared, wonderfully seasoned and served to perfection. My favorites were the Chilean Sea Bass and the Lamb Shank. In fact, these were so good that we ordered them twice in 2 days!
Another exceptional part of the W Barcelona experience were the lovely drinks served at the hotel. There I had the Best caiprihana that I've had since I visited Brazil, Wonderful mojitos, Fabulous Rioja and the greatest Cava ever! In fact, I am now going through Cava withdrawal....
Eclipse Bar: We visited the Eclipse bar one night and were a bit disappointed. As I said, Joey, the Lobby DJ was Wonderful and made us feel like dancing. So, we were a bit surprised that the DJ spinning at Eclipse was not nearly as good. Additionally, the bar had a lack of ventilation that gave the place a musty, sweaty smell. Additionally, at least 1/3 of the bar was blocked off for "VIPs", however, it was mostly empty while the rest of the bar was standing room only. We stayed about 15 minutes, then went back to the lobby to chill with Joey again.
Tips:
Book your tours early and remember that they do not run on Sundays.
Ask the Concierge desk about a great wine store in the area and purchase your Cava, Rioja, etc. there. The prices to import Spanish wines to the U.S. are Extremely high!
Relax and Enjoy every Minute spent in Beautiful Barcelona!!
