Firstly let me clarify - this apartment is on a little street called Templaris about 200 mtrs from Las Ramblas - not "right on the Ramblas" as has previously been mentioned.
On arriving in Barcelona, the keys need to be picked up from Barcelona Boutique Hotel which unfortunately is on opposite side of Plaza Catalunya but this is made quite clear on their info page. To locate this boutique hotel (not easy), first look out for a much larger one called Hotel Claris (on Pau Claris) and it's on the corner diagonally across from there. The only way of knowing it's a boutique hotel is by the plaque in the doorway below the bells. Great setup! Hope that helps some bit.
Anyway, after waiting 20 minutes on the street for the receptionist to return from wherever, I was let in to be given the keys and a very rough map showing the way to the apartment. Thankfully I'd done my homework on this and have been to Barcelona previously so knew my way around but a first time visitor may find it a bit stressful.
When we finally arrived at the (ugly) apartment block, the first thing we were greeted with was a smell of sewage in the stairwell and lift. My girlfriend and her 2 kids were not impressed with my choice of accommodation and we hadn't even got to the room yet. Once inside it very quickly became apparent that the room hadn't been touched since the previous occupants had left earlier that day. And this was 10.00 at night. Bedclothes thrown back after their nights sleep, toilet not cleaned and their 2 sets of keys still on the table. Maybe we should have contacted the hotel immediately but we set to work changing the sheets and cleaning up as best we could and I decided to leave it til tomorrow to talk to them. Outside of it being unclean, it wasn't a great apartment anyway. Some bulbs were missing, no toilet seat and no kettle in the kitchen so we had to make cups of tea in the microwave. A bit cramped also but that can be expected and the views were certainly not of a tree lined Ramblas as one reviewer has posted below. More like a 1960's communist office block. We considered moving out the next morning but as we only had one more night there, we decided it wasn't worth the hassle.
When we finally did complain to the hotel receptionist she made a phone call to someone I presume was responsible for the cleaning and then insisted to us that it had been cleaned. Really P'ed me off that she dismissed our complaints as untrue. I didn't want make too much of a fuss as I was afraid they'd keep our security deposit for any of the existing damage so left it at that.
To summarise, the apartment IS very central and is reasonably priced but thats really all it has going for it. No matter what price you pay you expect a place to at least be clean. Needless to say, we won't be returning to this place again. Barcelona has many better places to put your head down for a few nights.
Sorry for the long winded review but hopefully it'll help somebody else before they book.
Enjoy Barcelona!
