We stayed at El Moli for three days and will visit again in June 08 for a longer period.
El Moli is a great base from which to explore the northern parts of Catalonia as it is within easy reach of Girona, points along the coast such as Empuries and inland towns such as Besalu and the Dali Museum at Figures (a must see). After a day on the road, it was always nice to return to the quiet atmosphere of El Moli and to sit out on the patio and enjoy the sounds of the birds over a glass of wine.
As Canadians, we were surprised by the level of neatness and cleanliness of this working farm. While Maria and her husband operate a small feedlot, most of this large farm is devoted to grain crops.
The rooms are spacious and well appointed and we always experienced a comfortable and refreshing sleep.
The food was one of the highlights of our stay. We were treated to a variety of Catalan dishes that we still rave about to friends. For example, one evening, we thought that Maria was burning some branches ... but when we sat down for dinner, we were presented with lamb chops cooked over the coals of that fire. We have never tasted any finer chops! If you want to experience authentic Catalan food that you probably will not get in restaurants, then visit El Moli.
We were so taken with the place that we invited Maria to visit us in Canada. We will be back this spring to continue our friendship. It was one of the highlights of our visit to Spain. Elegant hotels cannot hold a candle to places like this.
