perhaps I made a mistake but when I read that it is a "stones throw" from the Aqueduct and historical sites, i took it literally.
i also thought the restaurant was worth trying for "Spain's best suckling pig
Wrong on both counts - it is miles / kilometres away
Can't tell if it is on the edge of the suburbs or the beginning of the country but a terrible location to get the feel of a historical city
This obviously got us off to a bad start but it became worse when on registration, I asked about help for our bags - we were on a major trip and had 5 cases.
They said they had no such service and besides which, they were under-staffed for the number of guests arriving in groups.
It seems clear it is more like a suburban hotel good for groups and for locals attending the local sporting activities but it is not an appropriate hotel for international travellers who wish to see the World Heritage sites
Our trip to Europe was to celebrate a major birthday for my wife and we combined some of the world's best restaurants with historical cities, art, museums, cathedrals etc.etc.
It was a wonderful trip except for Segovia
Spain has so much to offer and I thought with its World Heritage status that it was worth 2 days.
Fortunately, we were able to check out a day early and found a wonderful Monastery hotel not too far away run by the Sheraton group - an absolute delight.
Perhaps I'm spoilt by the Starwood group but on the way home via London and Singapore, I enjoyed swims in their pools without any charge.
At the Hotel Candido, the first comment was that I needed a cap and they could supply one for only 4 Euros.
I was then told that the entry to the pool was 12 Euros and that was for only 1/2 hour.
At that point I was out of there, I didn't bother asking about the thongs etc.etc.
That night, we went to the Restaurant Candido for the celebrated suckling pig but the service was perfunctory bordering on arrogance.
The food itself was ordinary, no better than a basic cafeteria - they are living in the past.
No doubt some 60 odd years ago, it may have had relevance but the management and staff are living in the past.
Spanish food is wonderful, probably the best in the world - thankfully we only had 1 bad experiience in the whole trip - it was a wonderful 3 weeks but this was to have been our last nights in Spain
A small thing but at breakfast in the morning, they kept playing the same song over and over and over and over......again
It wasn't even a good song - the worst form of muzak - but they didn't even know they had a problem.
I mentioned it at the desk and they didn't have a clue.
As I said, Spain is an absolutely wonderful country in every way - the people, the landscapes, the art museums, the restaurants - it was so good, we are going back in
September - the only difference is that we will be avoiding Segovia and the Hotel Candido in particular
- Candido Hotel Segovia
