“Great hotel”

I am just back from a great stay at the Melia Las Claras hotel. Great central location 10-15minutes walk from plaza major.
Rooms were good size with toiletries provided and 24 hour room service. Pillow menu aswell - great for getting a good nights sleep.
Breakfast had good choice with scrambled egg, breads etc.
Salamanca is a great destination with amazing architecture and lively nightlife. Plenty of shops and restaurants. Overall would recommend.

“Great room and good location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

We'd booked a superior twin room but when we checked in were upgraded to a junior suite, which was great! Big room with a separate seating area; good sized bathroom; modern and well-equipped. The location of the hotel is great - in a quiet street so no problems sleeping, but only 10 minutes walk from the Plaza Mayor and most of the things we wanted to see and do. I'm a member of the Melia club and this meant we got breakfast half price, which was good value and had a nice buffet. We didn't eat in the hotel in the evening, as there were so many other places to try in Salamanca, but we did have drinks in the 'bar' (which is in effect just the hotel lobby) - good service, but drinks rather expensive. There's a great wine bar (Vinodiaro) just across the street, which we used quite a lot - much better value and has nice food too. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would use this hotel again if returning to Salamanca.

“Very good hotel, but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2011

In many respects the Melia Las Claras deserves its ranking. Its quiet central location is ideal for visiting the old city. The room was clean and quite large (with a desk and an armchair). The bathroom (with warm reddish marble walls and various light sources) was spacious and perfect. The buffet breakfast in the bright ground floor restaurant was just delicious with a wide selection of food. We should have been been delighted but we were not. Why? The main reason for staying in a hotel usually is to spend a good night's sleep. We did not get it. In fact it was one of our worst sleeping experiences. The mattress was well over retirement age. And instead of resting on a normal bed base (bedspring or even slatted base) it was just placed on a simple wooden board! (they call it "placa"). The staff did not bother to find a solution, arguing that all rooms had the same beds that corresponded to the wishes of the guests! If you really want to rest chose another hotel or bring your own inflatable mattress. By the way, do not expect to use internet. Although Wi-Fi is costly it does not work.
Should you be around the Melia Las Claras in the late afternoon (it is close to San Esteban and Las Duenas cloisters) don't miss Vinodiario (Plaza de Los Basilicos 1) an unpretentious "vinoteca", on an old square, where they serve,by the glass and at very reasonable prices, delicious Spanish wines. Service is very friendly.
