The Husa Campus San Mames is an excellent three-star hotel near the University of Leon and an easy ten-minute walk to the city walls which mark the beginning of the city centre.
Rooms are exceptionally large and light. As this is not a city-centre building the hotel possesses none of the dreaded 'interior' rooms for which Spanish hotels are infamous -- those little cubicles that face out onto a tiny light shaft and within which the guest never has any idea if it's night or day outside. The rooms are furnished in a very simple manner with plain beech-coloured, functional table, chairs, and bedside cabinets. Bathrooms are fully equipped (i.e. they contain a bath and a bidet, amenities with which many newer Spanish hotels aimed at the foreign tourist market now dispense). Each room boasts a kitchenette with a full-sized under-counter larder fridge and icebox, and a two-ring hob.
Kitchen utensils can be borrowed free of charge from reception, as can a steam iron. Guests will find a range of leaflets about local amenities on the reception counter, staff will provide a free map of the city, and free magazines and newspapers (in Spanish only) are also available from reception and the cafeteria.
The rooms, cafeteria, and all public areas of the hotel are spotlessly clean.
There are a number of cafes and restaurants near the hotel, as well as several shops selling goods of various sorts. Guests who stay at this hotel for some time and wish to cook meals for themselves will find three supermarkets nearby, the closest being only a two-minute walk away (Mercadona).
The staff at the reception of this hotel were outstandingly friendly and helpful. Indeed, I can quite honestly say that I have virtually never received reception service of this sort. As Leon is a small city and the staff are all local they can give directions and advice on just about anything a guest may need to know! The cleaning staff and cafeteria staff are also extremely friendly and are more than willing to assist in any way they can.
This hotel is not a five-star luxury pad; it is a plain and simple three-star affair which nonetheless offers all necessary amenities to the guest. It deserves 5 out of 5 within its category.
My only caveat about this hotel is that the continental breakfast is a rather meagre affair, and the buffet breakfast seems a bit overpriced for the quality of the food on offer. If staying some time at this hotel it might be better, in terms of economy and quality, to pop round to the supermarket and stock up on yoghurt, juice, fruit, coffee, and croissants for breakfast.
All in all a cracker of a place, and highly recommended for longer visits to Leon, for families with children who need a large room, for visitors to the university, and anybody who wants to stay in a large, spotlessly clean room with plenty of sunlight, and receive the attentions of outstandingly friendly staff.
