This was supposed to be the highlight of our trip to Spain to celebrate my husband's 50th birthday. We had booked a suite with terrace view over the old walls. The room was lovely as anticipated, but on either side workmen were renovating each room noisily and with foul smelling paint, etc.
On drawing the problem to the staff's attention we were greeted with a curled lip and a shrug of the shoulders, and offered a basement room with three single beds and no light as an alternative!
It was made clear to us that we were a nuisance as opposed to a valued customer.
Regrettably it became clear that all the staff in the hotel did not welcome guests.
What a pity - the hotel manager clearly needs changing as otherwise this could be a great place.

If you are a history buff, this hotel is for you. It was originally a Cardinal's palace and is built right into the old city wall of medieval Toledo, Spain. The hotel is in an excellent location and is full of antiques and charm. One word of caution, there are lots of steps getting up to the hotel once the taxi drops you off. So, be sure and take the ramp to the right of the steps (when facing the hotel). It’s a must stay location. If we go back to Toledo, this hotel is on our return list. It was truly an oasis after trekking through Barcelona and Madrid.

The hotel is, like the town, full of charm and peace. It is full of quaint corners and lounges and even a nice Moorish courtyard in which to read a book or catch up with email. It is a little gem set in a former Cardinal's palace and very comfortable. Its situation by the Bisagra gate makes it easy to get to from the station by taxi or bus and it is only a short walk to the centre. The walk is uphill but nearby there is one of the two escalator systems to the high town. Breakfast is very good and in a beautiful setting. We found the staff to be very helpful and pleasant. It is worth noting that the restaurant is operated independently from the hotel and is moderately expensive but there are lots of alternatives in the town.

This hotel could be among one of the best, situated as it is in the walls of Toledo with charming garden and courtyards. However no trouble is taken by the rather unhelpful staff to make ones stay memorable. Our room was basic but fine with a very small bathroom with thin small towels and poor toiletries...no tissues. No drinking water provided for the bedrooms.
The breakfast was really dire...looked good but very poor ingredients, grey looking tortilla, horrible pastries not freshly made. Some decent slices of fruit but awful coffee and no freshly squeezed juices. We took breakfast in the town after the first morning, finding some charming cafes.
The restaurant is under different management and the staff there were much more professional. Each evening we ate outside in the beautiful gardens, amongst the turrets and old walls; the setting was magical. Sadly the food didn't really match the setting..just about ok but very limited with an unchanging menu, and one had to really stick to choices that played to their strengths...grilled meats, oven roasted chicken, avoiding processed vegetables and clearly bought in deserts. However the setting and ease of just settling in for the evening did make it worthwhile to eat there. There was a bar in the garden but we never saw it open and we bought our drinks from the inside bar and took them down to the outside area...our glasses remained there for several days.
The hotel couldn't have a more central location; a minute away from the escalators taking one straight up to the old town which is magical with so much to see. Old synagogues, El Greco paintings, beautiful cloisters.
Just a bit more effort really could make all the difference.
