“The perfect place(if it wasn't so green)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2007

By the time we arrived in Toledo we had been robbed twice(once in the Barcelona train station, and again on the Madrid metro-lambs to the slaughter!). Then, the second day in Toledo I twisted my ankle. The Alfonso VI was the perfect place to lick our wounds. We were determined not to allow our trip to be spoiled, and were very glad to have such a comfortable room to rest and regroup in. We had a wonderful view from our balcony and were able to gather strength and energy to enjoy the rest of our vacation. It is true that the staff was kind of grumpy, but they were also elegant and sort of old fashoned. It was like a hotel from another time-very relaxing and easy to be in. I am only sorry that the room was painted a sort of toothpaste green-who knows why these things happen.

“Avoid at all costs”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2006

Staying at the Alfonso VI was like living in Dante's Hell. The staff are rude, rude, rude. The beds are concrete. It is impossible to sleep because every single noise in the hotel can be heard, magnified. The breakfast buffet is inedible. Indeed all we had on the second morning was water! Avoid this place.

“A good hotel for a short stay in Toledo”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 October 2006

We were attracted to this hotel by prior reviews on Trip Advisor indicating that it was centrally located. The hotel is pleasant, if not warm and inviting, and its location was indeed very central (though a bit of an uphill walk from the main square). The hotel seems to be very old and has a charming restaurant and lounge downstairs. The rooms were spacious and clean. We requested a room facing the back of the hotel in order to avoid traffic noise. This turned out to be a wise choice -- our room was not only very quiet but had a balcony with a superb view of the city -- we really enjoyed resting there in between walks through town. The hotel is close to two inside parking buildings. Our advice would be to use them -- park the car upon arrival and see the City on foot.

Toledo itself is a must-see for travelers to the Madrid area and an overnight stay is a good idea because there really is much to see. The Alfonso VI is a quite reasonable choice of hotel -- good value for the money.

  • Liked — View from the balcony of our room
  • Disliked — No Internet connection
  • Tips/Secrets — We don't recommend driving in Toledo.

“Very Disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2006

It is right at the top of the town at the Alcazar and every day you've got to climb back up the hill to get to it. The 'Medieval' theme hides worn out furniture. Food leaves much to be desired. No toiletries left in rooms - you have to keep asking for them. Four star rated but no better than an average bed and breakfast establishment.
Look for somewhere else.

“Four Stars?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 October 2006

Rooms are old, deteriorated, decoration ugly, personnal not friendly, more than a four star hotel, I felt I was in a "Pension".
I understand Europe is the old continent and that its charm is just that: old things. But it would not hurt to renew this hotel , and when you are paying more than 130 euros for a room you expect at list the remote control to work.
