This is a great hotel, though it will not appeal to everyone. Let me list its good points and then what might be drawbacks for some people.
On the plus side: firstly, it is excellent value, especially if you book for several nights. We stayed for a week, in genuine four-star comfort, with an excellent breakfast ncluded, for less than £500. The room facilities were excellent (one exception -see below), the staff really helpful, and the atmosphere quiet and civilized. Very good bathroom, extremely comfortable bed, good range of TV channels & even a complementary chilled mineral water in the minibar rather than the usual rip-off price.
Might be negative for some people: the one flaw in the room was less-than-great air conditioning. So we opened the windows, but this let in the Canarian mosquitos !! Oh well. Also, the location is convenient, but not exactly beautiful - busy road right outside & you are opposite the city football stadium and surrounded by fairly humdrum apartment blocks. Then again, our room had a view of the mountains behind the city and there was absolutely no traffic noise.
The 'escuela' in the hotel name means this is also a hotel school, so some of the staff are trainees learning the business. In our experience, this meant they were really eager to help, but as this city doesn't attract many British visitors (who usually go elsewhere in Tenerife) you need to be able to speak at least basic Spanish. Fine for us, but might not suit others.
Santa Cruz is not, in many ways, a holiday city - it's the island capital & full of everyday urban bustle, but this makes it highly atmospheric for those who enjoy Hispanic culture. Lots of great shops (including an eight-storey El Corte Ingles - retail heaven) and a cafe on every corner. If you like city breaks on the Spanish mainland, Santa Cruz is an interesting option - it's reminiscent, in different ways, of Valencia and Malaga. And you have easy access to anywhere on the island via the brilliant bus network.
