Got off to a bad start when we could't get to H. Amberes in our car using the map provided. We weren't sure if we were driving up pedestrian-only streets but past caring in the end and parked on the pavement. Then found the door was locked (it was 2.00pm) and there was a note (in German) pinned on it. Could have understood Spanish but don't speak any German. A guy in the street asked if we were staying there and obligingly phoned to get someone. 15 minutes later (on tenterhooks expecting a cop to arrest us for parking offences) another guy came down the street and it turned out he was the cook and would let us in (this all by sign language since he only spoke German).
OK, we were in the hotel at last. There's a pretty courtyard and the room was fine, bed very comfortable, bathroom looked posh. But there was no information and no one to ask.
We went out for a drink and when we returned we realised the room was freezing cold and there was no heating. We showered and got into bed to keep warm. Had dinner in the hotel restaurant, which is round the corner. At least the waitress spoke a little English - enough to tell us what the options were. The starter was carrot soup and that's all it was. Just pureed carrots with no other flavour. We fancied a veggie meal and that was vegetables with couscous - again just what it sounds like. Hardly cuisine or the promised "delicious gourmet meals". The piece de resistance was the dessert : there was no vanilla ice cream (which was part of the 3 desserts on the menu). Only avocado ice cream. You can imagine what it tasted like...
Breakfasts were just as cursory, you got a glass of orange juice, a pot of yogurt, a couple of small solid croissants, a slice of rye bread, and coffee or tea.
Another waitress with some English told us that there was no room heater because another guest had it.
The crowning insult was that we were kept awake by a snoring guest - the only other person staying there had been put in the room next to us, and his bed head was on the other side of the wall to ours.
So, even if you do speak German, I wouldn't recommend this hotel. Not really a hotel as there are none of the services you would expect. More of a room for rent. We never saw anyone on reception except for 5 minutes when we were leaving.
