We stayed one night at the Best Western Hotel Cantur. The hotel itself is just fine - comfortable beds, linens, and in-room coffee/tea. The breakfast was decent. The rooftop bar/pool were cool. Unfortunately, our stay there started off poorly due to incredibly poor and rude service from the front desk.
There is a requirement in Spain that you have your passport to check-in to a hotel. Upon trying to produce ours, I realized I had left mine at the last hotel, which was in the south of the island. The woman checking us in was unable to help me troubleshoot how to handle this situation (volunteering ways to solve the problem), she seemed almost smugly glad we were unable to check-in, saying, "you are not staying here without that passport." And then smirked.
I actually had to explain to her that her reaction was not helpful and that losing one's passport in a foreign country is a stressful experience and suggested that what would help is if she could call that hotel and see if they could find my passport and transmit that information to her. She sighed, and then begrudgingly agreed to do that. She seemed very put-out. She refused to let us go to our room (despite my co-traveler having HIS passport), sit elsewhere while waiting for the response from the hotel, or offer us anything while we were waiting, and just kept repeating that she would not check us in without my passport. (Then I had to calmly respond that she had said that many times and we understood - it was all I could do to be cool with her).
Later, after i was reunited with my passport, we checked-in with a colleague of hers who had remarkably different mannerisms. She was polite, helpful, and considerate. So I think there many be just one rude person working there. But believe me, the first gal we had (and whom other reviewers seem to have met as well!) refined the art of being quietly passive-aggressive combined with overt rude hostility. What a disappointment during our last night on Gran Canaria.
We didn't have time to use the pool (we spent too much time in the lobby waiting to check in) but we did have a look before the sun went down and it looked very nice. Urban, with views around Las Palmas, and a lot of sun! There were loads of Scandinavians sunbathing and drinking from the rooftop bar (which also looked nice) too. It was a shame we couldn't wait up there while checking in!
I will give the service a high mark based on the employees that displayed even a modicum of empathy and helpfulness and the competent people in the breakfast room.
