I and my husband have recently returned from a three night mid-week stay at The Hotel Araxa. After much deliberation between a number of Palma hotels, we decided to try the Araxa based on its reviews on Tripadvisor - and we were not disappointed.
Our flight was a late evening flight, so we hopped in a taxi which cost us €17 (it was roughly the same on the return journey out to the airport at the end of our stay). We arrived at the hotel at 10.15 p.m., and received a freindly welcome from at the reception desk. Check in took only a matter of minutes and we were allocated room 304, which is at the front of the hotel just above the entrance.
We found our room to be very spacious and well furnished with an equally spacious bathroom, The television featured spanish channels only, but as we do not go on holiday to watch television, it did not bother us in the least. Overall our impressions were very favourable.
As the restaurant closed at 10.30, we opted for the bar menu, which had a lovely selection of pa a amb oli (a spanish style open sandwich with olive oil, tomatoes, and a variety of toppings). Our food was excellent and including a glass fo wine each, came to €20 which we felt was very reasonable, given the quality of the food.
We found the bar to be small, but comfortable, and the foyer of the hotel itself is nicely furnished, giving you a real feel for majorcan taste and culture.
During our stay we had no difficulties in getting a night's sleep and we were more than happy with the breakfast on offer each morning. The Araxa's clientele appears to be predominantly spanish and northern european - so you would expect the emphasis to be on a continental-style breakfast. However, there was always hot eggs and either bacon or sausage, if you wanted a little something closer to home-style.
We enjoyed dinner in the hotel dining room on our second night there - the food was good and the waiting staff were more than freindly to us. In fact we found all hotel staff to be warm and welcoming during our stay.
The Araxa is certainly not the closest hotel to the city centre by any means - however, a five minute walk will take you to the bus stop, and a a further 10 minute ride will take you right into the heart of the city centre. We certainly found it more enjoyable to be in the suburbs, with a garden to relax in, with the option of heading into the city when we wanted.
On our last night, the hotel was filled by a visiting orchestra from Stockholm who were due to perform in the city. It was lovely to hear some of the musicians practicing and one even positioned himself in the garden to paint for the morning! How often do you get that as an added bonus! But that I think really sums up the type of experience that a hotel like the Araxa can offer - a little bit different from the "norm"
All in all, we had a blissful few days at this hotel, and would definitely return for more!
