“Perfect location for a very quiet and relaxing beach holiday”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 August 2010

If you choose to stay at this hotel, you should do so in the knowledge that the location is simply this hotel, a highly recommended beach bar (closes 22:30) and 2 restaurants (both close midnight). If a quiet resort sounds good to you then read on.
The rooms are very average spanish hotel rooms, so clean and pleasant enough but not plush, there was a lcd tv that had bbc world news and sky news, a fridge with enough space for a couple of wine bottles, a double bed made of two singles pushed together and an ample size wardrobe, 2 armchairs etc. the balcony was large and as we had a sea view we were happy. The room was cleaned and towels changed every day. We slept very well as the air con as other reviewers have mentioned was very good, (so good in fact we had to turn it down !) and there is little or no noise from outside.
We spent most of our stay at the hotel pool which was never too busy (had the pool to ourselves many times) and loungers, umbrellas were free as opposed to the beach where it would have been 18 euros for the same, we swam in the clear sea a couple of times every day as it was only a 2 minute walk from pool area to the sea.
The hotel reception area was nice enough with a internet point (free) a large tv, chess, books etc and plenty of seats, the bar was reasonably priced (3 euros a beer/wine). As we had read you do share a table for meals with another room and the main issue is that the tables only have comfortable room for 2, but with 3 hour dining windows it is possible to miss each other as we did mostly. The food is varied but buffet canteen style so not piping hot but tasty enough - pasta, paella, chips, etc.
Formentera is a stunning island and with bikes to hire and a irregular bus service from the hotel you have no excuse not to see the island in depth, but if you plan on staying in this resort you will have a perfectly chilled holiday!. We will be returning to this hotel.

“Great”

We had a lovely room with a sea view. The sunsets were unbelievable. The sea was aquamarine. The food was great with fantastic garnishes ie a swan made out of a beef tomato! We were spoilt for choice with the meals with plenty of different foods to try. It was very well presented. The staff were extreemly helpful as we had problems with our travel agent who seemed to think we did not exist!! Without the help of the staff, we might still be there.

“Cala Soana”

We booked for a week end July/early August through Portland Holidays on a half board basis.

We loved the location as we wanted a relaxing week by the sea. There are 2 restaurants which serve good food - the better one is the one nearest to the sea. They serve fresh fish which is superbly cooked.

On the left hand side of the bay (looking out to sea) is a beach shack which serves basic sandwiches and tortilla at cheaper prices plus they serve drinks at the bar. it is a great place - very relaxed and friendly.

The staff at the hotel were mostly okay. We had issues the first day as we needed euros and they said they couldn't change the money that day and we needed to wait until the following day, despite the brochure saying they did currency exchange. The following day they then short-changed us once at the desk which we picked them up on, and then after we had walked away and recounted we realised we were 5 euros short again - they gave us the money but me thinks they need to learn some basic maths....All we had wanted was a bottle of water on that first day and the hotel bar (which we are told is separate from the hotel) refused to put this on our room until we complained to reception and they intervened.

the evening buffet was not good. the hot food was warm and not hot and looked like it had been cooked earlier that day and then left to cool down. they had salads which were ok. the breakfasts were fine. regarding the seating arrangements previously mentioned..yes we were put on a table with another British couple yet we asked the waiter and their table number was moved to another table. nothing personal but it was a small table for 4 and we didnt want to spend every breakfast and evening meal with a couple that we didn't know.

The pool is great! It's a sea water pool and it has good shady areas - we went there in the afternoon when the beach became too hot. The beach is good as well. It is completely sandy.

The sunset views are great. A lot of people sat on the beach watching this or went swimming to do so.

overall we would go back...i dont think this can be booked B&B which personally we would have preferred but its still good.

“ONLY GOOD THING WAS THE BEACH”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2008

We booked the hotel Cala Saona because of its location and the supposed views, we requested a seaview however on arrival we were show to a small, stuffy, room with dated tired decor overlooking what seemd to be the kitchen extractors. When we refused to accept this room we were given a room which looked out on to the road which was very noisy. So much for the seaview and the peace and quiet. The dining experience is best not experienced- you are told where to sit (reminding us of school!) and the food is poor. Do what we did cut the visit short booked alternative accomodation nearer civilisation and had our pick of the excellent chirringuitos
Verdict beautiful setting but very basic outdated hotel with poor service and bad food and not value for money remember the beach is free you can visit it and then go and stay somewhere decent

“Quiet oasis”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2008

My wife and I have just returned from 2 weeks at Hotel Cala Saona. We had no complaints about the facilities. The room was large enough with a fridge ,air conditioning, bathroom and balcony. The meals were very good- you could see that most guests were going back for more - the advantage of a buffet. The downside -sometimes a dish would be lukewarm until the tray was refilled. The choice and quality were above average; our problem was -what not to have ,rather than what shall we have.
The staff were helpful and friendly without exception.
The location , a stroll out onto a sheltered beach with great sands and beautiful clear waters with snorkelling on the left hand side near the rocks, was picturesque with brilliant sunsets. The best beach for sand and swimming. Not popular with people seeking an all over tan.
The nearest town /village is 5.5kms away with shops, big supermarket ,cafes- a 20 min bike ride for us. Bikes can be hired near to the hotel. Next to the hotel was a mini-market- low in content but high in prices. Our port of call for wines was a supermarket at the crossroads - 2.5 kms.
With its location ,it's a very quiet hotel- in the evenings no other bars apart from the hotel bar [closes at midnight] Beer 2.20 euros. Large serving of brandy -3.00 . Coffee 2.00
No entertainment -make your own. Will go back again to Formentera but would prefer accommodation nearer to other bars, shops but would happily stay in this hotel again
