“Hotel on the top of mount”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 February 2012

I stayed two days in this hotel. Location of the hotel is wonderful. From the top of the mount in the yours room you can see all city San Sebastian or Atlantic ocean. You can use funicular to go in the city or came back in the hotel or go walking by road and see splendid views. Restaurant is good. Breakfast was ok. Staff is helpful. Internet was more expensive. Room is clean and large. Bed is comfortable. Bathroom is clean and new. Nice hotel with fantastic views.

“THE view of San Sebastian!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 January 2012

This hotel is all about the location! It overlooks the town of San Sebastian and ithe view is simply stunning, especially at night when all the lights come on. It is a bit tricky to get to, and up a long winding road. You have to go through a gate to get to a sort of national park and they charge EUR1.90 unless you are staying at the hotel. The hotel itself is fine - not outstanding, but definitely clean and our room with three beds was spacious. We had a welcome bottle of water and some chocolates, which was nice. Afternoon tea in the downstairs bar area was great, with nice views of the town as the sun set. Dinner was fine, but nothing special. The water was cut off overnight due to works in the area and was meant to be back in by 7am, but it wasn't..... So that meant an earlier departure than otherwise with no shower and no working toilets! We were given free bottles of water and free breakfast to make up for it, which was a reasonable trade-off. Internet access is EUR5 per machine per 24 hours.

We had the impression that this was once a grande old dame of a hotel, but it certainly is a bit tired now. That said, if you want an amazing view, then stay here for one night (make sure you ask for an ocean view) and then stay somewhere down in town. It is a hard walk back up the hill if you want to go into town from here!

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view on floor 3 or 4.

“A Fine Place to Stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2012

The location of the hotel is unbeatable. It is situated on top of a hill and fairly remote from the old city and the beaches. However the vistas are truly indescribable; I've never seen anything like them.

Only stayed en route from Bilbao ferry to Val D'Aran -but we will be back. Fantastic views. Excellent food - especially fresh fish and seafood. Pleasant staff. Excellent room. Impossible to fault. Thoroughly recommended.

“One of the most dramatic settings for any hotel, but....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 December 2011

The views are stupendous from the lobby, the rooms, the restaurant...even the parking lot. As a result, perhaps nothing else should matter. But there are lots of things about this hotel that don't work very well. The staff is professional and acommodating, but the decor is dated. The entire facility needs a refresh.

Even some minor changes could improve things dramatically; for example, the lighting in the lobby and restaurant is more suited to a convention center than a romantic hotel. The music is too loud, with cliche' selections. Finally, the vast public spaces are barren, with no plants, partitioning, side tables....nothing. It really compromises the feel of the place.

We also had some confusion about the rooms. The hotel offers some triple rooms, but they're not available through the Mercure website, and the pricing is not tranparent. I was shocked to find that my bill was over 100 euros higher than expected due to the unadvertised "supplement" for the triple room that I had previously known nothing about.

With a lot of work, this hotel could be a five-star palace. With just a little, it would be a great four star. Right now, it's just mediocre. But the view trumps everything.....
