We were 4 friends who greatly enjoyed the Pinxto Tour and Tasting on a chilly night in April. The tour was said to be 5 places with 1 pinxto and 1 beverage in each spot - so, at 85euros, that seemed a bit high, but the reviews were so good that we decided to try it. (Okay, as the trip planner: I decided we would try it!) I posted Eli ahead of time that the other lady in the group needed no gluten/no dairy - a further risk to the success of the evening.....
Well, it was phenomenal! Eli turned out to be our guide, and she's everything you could want: funny, charming, and a true Basque. She pulled us to a stop several times to tell us about the history of that particular area in San Sebastian, seemed well-known and much-liked in each stop we made.
And the food.....we went to 6 spots, and if memory serves, the first stop was indeed only one dish ("the best shrimp in the city"). But - every other stop included at least two, perhaps 5, dishes. And not just "a pinxto", but 3-4 generously filled plates of each item for our total tour group of 10. We had not only great wine at each stop, but one was the local hard cider (because it complemented the item), I believe one was beer. The food seemed to progress from simple (the shrimp) to more complex (a veal cheek stew that's a local specialty, paired with amazing foie gras....lovely!)
At each spot, Eli had arranged ahead that there would be at least one item for our friend that was non-gluten & dairy - and the friend had a superb time sampling along with the rest of us (she'd been a real trooper on the trip when we raved about dishes she had to avoid, so this was superb!)
About the 4th stop was "sirloin" - not a cut that I expect to be too impressed with, this skewer of sirloin pieces was so delicious and tender that our 4 returned there the next night for dinner - and laughed when the 6 Australians who'd been on the tour with us were seated at the next table. A true insight into the quality of the food served on this tour! I'd also point out that while they say the tour is for 2 hours, Eli kept us wandering and happy for closer to 3 - perhaps not a constant, but great fun for us.
Summarizing: do this trip - we all believed strongly that we could not have replicated it for the price, much less the quality and generosity of the proprietors!
