“Pleasant hotel in good location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 October 2010

This is a good choice if you want to visit Bilbao but want to get away from the city for some respite. Getxo is on the metro line to Bilbao and offers a quieter location to relax in. The hotel is ideally placed to offer lovely views over the enormous harbour which is constantly busy with all kinds of watercraft and sports. The promenade it fronts onto is constantly alive with people engaged in walking, cycling rollerblading and so on and makes for interesting people watching all through the day and evening.

The hotel is good but perhaps not quite as good as several I have stayed in and I would say it was considerably overpriced. Its greatest feature being its position by the water. The service is polite and efficient. Breakfast choice became monotonous at the end of a week with little choice for non meat eaters. The choice comes nowhere close to those you get in the likes of German hotels.

The decor is fresh and stylish in black, white and red and rooms and public areas are very clean and tidy. Rooms are not very spacious but alright. Wardrobe space and hangers were limited. The bathroom is fine but I've had much classier ones in many other hotels. I did not like the wash basin which put design before function and its stopper did not appear to work. The shower was over the bath which was high enough to pose a problem for people with mobility difficulties.

Lots of opportunities to walk around the area and there were shops and restaurants about 10-15 mins walk from the hotel, as was the metro station. Use the metro to get around to some of the other places along the line to discover some quaint little villages.

“Almost Perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 August 2010

This hotel is a gem, located right on the sea front with a beautiful outdoor terrace. Our room and bathroom was fabulous, clean, comfortable and had everything you would need. Definitely worth paying a little extra for a room sea with a sea view! The breakfast was very good too. It is a 15 minute walk to the nearest restaurants and bars, however, a beautiful stroll along the promenade, or a short taxi ride. The staff couldn't have been more helpful.

“Wonderful Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 July 2009

July 12, 2009 We just got back from Northern Spain. Ercilla Embarcadero hotel was our favorite . We had a ocean view room on the harbor room 21 beautiful room and english speaking staff with great recommendations. We did the breakfast and were happy we did. Did not see any breakfast places near by and did not want to drive. The train is across the street so very easy to get to Bilbao in 15 minutes. Did Guggenheim and old city. There is a nice walkway all around the harbor walk to the fishing village of Purto Viejo for Tapas we dined at Karola Etxea (Basque House) restaurant was one of the best meals we had. Restaurants open at 9p. Stay here not in Bilbao center.

“Special vibe, cool views”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2008

Fantastic hotel. I only stayed here one night but wish i had stayed the whole trip here instead of right in Bilbao. Beautiful rooms - you feel like you are in someone's old summer villa, which you probably are! Great views of harbor. Staff extremely friendly and accommodating. Feels very special!

“Boutique hotel at its best”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2007

We have stayed twice in this hotel and we have been extremely pleased both times. It is the best expression of a boutique hotel: small, independent, comfortable, very nicely decorated, personal, friendly...

Location and decoration are excellent, right on the sea, quiet, with wonderful views. They have been very brave with the decor (flowered wall paper in the rooms, something you don't come to expect in a hotel) and it worked: it is modern, elegant and at the same time you feel more in a home than in a hotel. They have a very nice lounge with a private terrace and sitting in any of these places with a drink in the afternoon is a real pleasure: if the weather is nice you have the sun illuminating the bay in front of you, if the weather is bad, seeing the storm coming from the sea behind the window can be spectacular. Although it is not in the center of Bilbao, but some 10 km away, there are less than 5 minutes walking to the subway station and the subway is cheap, modern and reliable, there is a n easy walk on the promenade to the center of the town (Las Arenas) and you will find plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants.

Apart from that, the staff is nice and competent. We wanted to change the reservation with the internet site we had use and found plenty of problems (could cancel but not modify!!), so we called the hotel directly and not only noted the change but contacted the original provider of the reservation themselves to change it with them. They are attentive and detail oriented and all in all, it contributes to make you feel relaxed and cared for.

We go to Bilbao regularly and will keep on going to the Embarcadero since the second good experience just confirmed the excellent first impression.

  • Liked — Atmosphere, service, decoration.
  • Disliked — It rained, but they cannot do anything about it.
