This is a stylish, sleek and yet very comfortable modern hotel in an beautifully converted old Basque style mansion out in the quiet harbour-side suburb of Getxo. If you want a more relaxing base to visit the urban goliath of Bilbao, this should be your choice. Staff are uniformly friendly and helpful, speak good English and will happily book your restaurants for you. There is a great little terrace for pre-dinner drinks overlooking the harbour, and a nice downstairs bar where you can also grab a coffee and juice if you don't fancy the full breakfast. The stroll down the harbour promenade in the evening is lovely, and there is a very nice beach at the end, perhaps 20 minutes walk away.
Ask for a room with a sea view and pay the extra 18 euros - it really is worth it.
For those taking the ferry back to England in the morning, the hotel is conveniently close and out of the horrors of driving in central Bilbao. We took the extraordinary iron transporter bridge across the river as our means of getting to the port - this is a sight in itself, but it's also fun to use it, along with the line of Spanish commuters moving around the area (but if you do choose this option, allow an extra 30 or 40 minutes, as the bridge ferry takes only 6 cars per crossing).
The metro is a pleasant 10 minute walk through residential streets, and then takes about 30 minutes into the centre of the old town. Beware if you are dining in the centre on Spanish time, as the tube system closes down at 11.00 pm, stranding various diners and post-theatre goers.
