“Don't stay here.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 January 2012

I would never have chosen to stay here based on the reviews I had read but was attending a business meeting centered on the hotel.

(They're not really geared up for business - one, very noisy, meeting room.)

The room was clean but nothing special, the window looked out onto the wall of the next building, almost within arm's length. There is some sort of night spot just across the street and you can expect to hear pounding music and people partying on the sidewalk into the small hours of the morning.

I didn't try the restaurant and wasn't able to try the bar, because it was never open.

Something I found atrocious for Spain was that the coffee in the breakfast room was instant, not brewed - quite foul.

The staff wouldn't lift a finger to be helpful - we had pre-payed our room through the association that organized our event yet they insisted on making us pay on check-out. One night with a severely arthritic friend in tow they refused to open the entrance to the lower elevator lobby, forcing us to walk four floors up the outside stairs to reception.

No real horror stories - just thoroughly unattractive and devoid of character.

If you want to use their parking garage, they recommend reserving ahead.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else.

“Good central location; friendly and comfortable for business”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 November 2011

Stayed two nights here on business. Reception staff surprised me by saying "welcome back" - I had stayed once before, 6 years ago!
A clean and tidy hotel in the upper middle range.
Comfortable room and bathroom and a good night's sleep
The free Internet conection was rather slow.
At the Business Centre you can print your Boarding Pass (etc.) at no cost.
Excellent breakfast to set you up for your outing to the Guggenheim - or the many other attractions of Bilbao and the region.
The hotel has a high standard of accessibility for disabled guests and has been audited under the "Euskadi for All" access labelling scheme.

“Very good hotel and very central,”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2011

The hotel is situated in the city centre and 20mins.walk to the Guggenheim Museum along the beautiful river-bank.It's also about 30mins walk. to the old city .The Metro station is nearby and I suggest you take it to the beaches about 30mins.away.The hotel is an excellent choice. We would definitely stay there again.

“This place is just sad with a capital S! And don't be lured in by the Hotwire listing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 July 2011

I don't have a problem with modest motels which offer bare bones accommodations, sagging mattresses, dark corridors, and cheap toiletries. What gives offense is when the place I just described presents itself as a 4 star lodging that is easily 2 stars higher than it deserves and charges accordingly. Take a closer look at the photo gallery (of the rooms) and you'll see what I mean. The unattractive blue and yellow bedding is reminiscent of a flannel nightgown circa 1972 and the fake flower pot glued down on the bathroom counter was a classy touch.

Beyond the sad ambience of the room, I was not at all happy about the dishonesty of the hotel details on Hotwire. I booked this hotel on Hotwire based on the star level, complimentary breakfast and proximity to the Guggenheim. Of the three criteria, only the latter was true. When we arrived, the front desk told us that our booking only included the cost of the sub-standard room despite the PRINTED CONFIRMED RECEIPT which clearly showed that it was. Rather than making an effort to honor this amenity, they told me to call Hotwire myself and figure it out with them directly.

Transparency and accurate information about the quality and amenities of a hotel is important to weary travelers even on discounted sites like Hotwire. It's fine if users of these sites are appointed to the lower strata of rooms and services, but it is not cool to offer these attractive features online to lure them into a booking and then retract them once the traveler has arrived to the hotel.

The only positive thing I have to say about the Jardines De Albia is that it is within 5-10 minutes from the Guggenheim. The neighborhood is lovely, the stroll is pleasant, and the museum is extraordinary. The hotel is a massive disappointment.

My advice is to book elsewhere.
