“Good value modest hotel.”

I stayed here for 3 nights with 2 friends. We had a friendly welcome.
We all had single rooms. They were clean and had the usual facilities, including a small bath with plenty of hot water.
Initially we thought our rooms were cold until we realised we could switch on the radiators; perhaps we should have been told this on checking in.
My room seemed rather noisy the first night. , it sounded like lift doors opening and closing., but the hotel has no lift. I think there are apartments above the hotel, (it is in a multi-storey building ) and I may have been hearing their lift. My friend in the next room didn't hear it.
The continental-style breakfast, cost 6 euros. There was excellent coffee, freshly made for each guest, fruit, juice, cereals, fresh rolls and croissants, and various sweet cakes ,etc, in packets.
We walked to the Guggenheim the first morning, but later found there is a Metro station quite near, at Plaza de Zabalburu.
Despite doing a lot of research beforehand on the internet I found it difficult to work out the routes of the metro lines, buses, and trams in relation to the geography of the city, there needs to be a much better tourist map than any I could find. But the staff in the Information offices were very helpful, and in fact we were offered help everywhere, by station staff, and passers-by when they saw us puzzling over maps.
We were told we did not have to vacate our rooms till noon on our last day, and we were able to leave our bags there until we had to leave for the airport. .

“nice staff but smelly room”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 March 2011

The hotel is good for the budget. It has wi-fi and the breakfast was OK.
It is not located in the best area, you need to walk for 15-20minutes to reach the very centre of Bilbao.
Though the staff were very friendly and helpful,
the non smoking room we stayed did smell like tobacco. The walls are yellow/brown and so was the carpet. Not very hygienic/fresh I would say.
The hotel needs a renovation.
I would not stay there again.

“The day crew pretty good, night crew SUCKS”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2011

It is far too expensive for what you get, it's a glorified hostel. Location is pretty good, but the staff is not attentive at all. If I had to do it again, I would not stay here.

“A dirty and depressing room and a rude welcome”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2010

I thought that with a name like 'Vista Alegre' the hotel might have pleasant rooms and nice views, but I shortly learned that the name refers instead to the district. Fair enough. But I had a depressing and poorly-lit room with a window facing an internal wall. I've travelled a lot in Spain, having stayed in the vast majority of the provinces, and I can say for sure that this was the dirtiest hotel room that I have found in the peninsula. As soon as I walked a few steps without shoes my socks were totally black. Thankfully there were a couple of toilet rolls so I attempted to clean some of the worst of the filth out of my path. It was disgusting. Also, the member of staff on the front desk was offhand, dismissing my request for a non-smoking room with not a comment. Yuk - certainly never to return again!!

“Reasonable Hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 January 2009

I stayed here for a couple of nights as part of a Christmas weekend away. Because of this the cost played a big role in where I chose to stay and the Vista Alegre is pretty cheap (I paid 96 euros for 2 nights).

The location of the hotel is pretty good - within walking distance of the very pretty 'Casco Viejo' (Old Quarter) and enough buses, trams, metros etc. all near by to travel into the city centre or visit the Guggenheim. Some people might find the surrounding neighbourhood a little intimidating (there is a small commercial centre over the road that has sex shops and some dodgy characters hanging around at night!) but I had no problems.

The hotel staff were all very helpful and I was given a useful map and recommendations on the best places to see and routes to take within 5 minutes of arriving (contrary to some reviews I'd read saying the staff were very unhelpful). The rooms are fine (bearing in mind it's a 2 star hotel) - small-ish but clean and with good heating. Although I had a front room I had no problems with noise. Overall, totally adequate for the cost and purpose.
