“PLEASANTLY SURPRISED BY BILBAO AND ARTETXE.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

We had no expectations about Bilbao, and it wasn't even on our itinerary when we arrived in Madrid, but upon recommendations by our B&B host in Madrid we decided to include a couple of days in Bilbao to check it out. We found Artetxe through TripAdvisor, and neither the hotel nor Bilbao disappointed.
We booked Hotel Artetxe because we were driving and were looking for a hotel with parking, which Artetxe offers it for free, as it is way outside Bilbao itself. Don't be put off by this, though. It is only a 5 min. drive to the funicular which takes you to Bilbao in no time, and believe me, once you navigate the Bilbao streets/traffic you'll be glad you are staying outside the city center. You'll also be glad you stayed here once you take a look at the vistas from the garden and the sunrise.
We stayed at a double room in the annex building. It had plenty of space, the furniture is basic but comfortable and it has everything you may need. The bathroom was small, especially the shower, but we found this to be the standard in Europe in our price range. Nothing we could not live with for a couple of days. We felt our room was pretty secluded and enjoyed the quietness.
We did not try the breakfast buffet, but it is 7 euros p/p, if I remember correctly.
I would certainly stay here again when I return to Bilbao. We loved it!

“Excellent value”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

The four of us stayed three nights in a double and in a twin for € 146 a night, buffet breakfast included. But they also offer standard and top a.c. accommodations. Clean rooms and baths, quiet atmosphere, great view from the garden, free parking, easy access (two minutes drive) to funicular (three minutes downtown), friendly staff. When coming back from a full day visit in Bilbao, hotel guests would appreciate a special price menu option in the nearby restaurant.

Room Tip: First floor twins are larger, ground floor doubles have a view on the garden.

“Very clean and comfortable hotel with very helpful staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2011

Stayed for 2 nights before catching ferry back to UK. Hotel is on the edge of Bilbao and from our basic but comfortable room we had a great view and looked down into the centre of the city. The hotel was quiet at night and we slept well with the window fully open. the room was not massive but very clean and the facilities provided were great.

The staff were very helpful and friendly. They sought us out individually to warn about the electricity disconnection the next morning (elec. company carrying out maintenance in the area) and the special arrangements they were making.

8 minutes to drive to the centre of the city but I am not sure how easily we would have found the route without the sat nav. We would certainly stay here again if return by ferry from Bilbao.

“Most helpfull staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 July 2011

Oh, we loved our 4-days stay in Bilbo and what à helpfull staff they have in hotel Artetxe. Especially Eva was our guide and gave magnificent tips where to go and where to eat. THE view from our room was magnificent, only comparanle to THE view we had over Innsbruck staying in Aldranserhof. Breakfast was sufficiënt, though public transport is excellent you need à car to the funicalar. To find The hotel keep THE sign Artxanda. “Great Location Just Out of Town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 July 2011

Absolutely great location on hillside overlooking Bilbao. Easy access to and from ferry port.
Really friendly and helpful staff. Excellent value. Easy access to fenicular railway into Bilbao centre.
The only downsides are NOT the hotel fault....one is that the restaurant next door was pricey and the menu was basically 'do you want fish or meat'! the second is that Bilbao is basically closed on a Monday, so don't expect to find a restaurant, bar or supermarket open anywhere near to this hotel.....but what I would recommend is taking the fenicular into town and experienceing Plaza Nueva and one of its Tapas Bars for the night....last fenicular up the hill is 11pm in the summer!
We stayed there on both the first night and last night of our 12 day trip to Spain and would definitely go bak to this hotel - a real gem!
