This four star, discreet, ultra-modern, avant-garde hotel opened earlier this year and is part of the large Bilbao Grand Casino, which has a separate entrance in the same building. The hotel has an unusual design. The ground floor entrance simply consists of a double set of lifts where you ascend to a small reception area on the second floor – more like entering an office than a hotel. On the same floor is a large lounge, one side of which has tables where breakfast is served. Free wi-fi access is available in the lounge and throughout the hotel.
The standards of both design and comfort are superlative. Rooms are extremely comfortable and well appointed. I had a double bed with a view looking down on a pedestrian precinct. Standard features included air-conditioning, minibar, room safe and flat screen TV. The stylish bathroom contained a shower but no bathtub. There was a wide variety of food and drink available as room service. Breakfast buffet was of good quality and contained hot and cold food although for the standard of hotel the variety of choice was slightly disappointing. The lack of a bar was surprising. Of course, there are plenty of bars in Bilbao but the majority are very small and crowded and it’s pleasant to be able to have a quiet relaxing drink in a hotel bar. The first floor has an entrance to the restaurant, although this is actually part of the Casino complex. There was an outside terrace but, this being November, it was not open – despite the excellent hot, sunny weather!
Considering the standard of hotel, the price was extremely reasonable at around 75 euros plus breakfast. Location, just off the Gran Via is perfect.
