“perfect location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

The hotel is perfectly located in a very nice neighborhood- two blocks from a major shopping area, 15 minute walk from the Guggenheim and the Casco Viejo area. Plenty of restaurants, bars and pedestriuan only areas to hang out.
The rooms were big and modern. Extremeley clean. Our only small complaint was that the room was too hot and we had a hard time turning off the heat.
Highly recommended for a weekend stay- for sure!

“comfortable, classy and central”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 November 2011

I stayed here for one night before catching a very early flight from Bilbao airport. It was an easy walk to the shopping districts and sights. Getting to the airport was also convenient - it was 6 euros to the bus stop, and then less than 2 euro to get the bus to the airport.

The bed was comfortable, and the room was very modern and clean. Even the corridors were spotless, whereas in a lot of hotels these can be a bit tired-looking and neglected.

It was extremely quiet so I got an excellent night's sleep. The wifi was also good.

It would have been useful to have an alarm clock of some sort in the room, and it would have been nice to have received a street map from the hotel staff, as I did get a bit lost with my less detailed one! Otherwise, though, there were no negative aspects.

I would stay here again and recommend it to my friends.

“Ultra-modern comfort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2011

This four star, discreet, ultra-modern, avant-garde hotel opened earlier this year and is part of the large Bilbao Grand Casino, which has a separate entrance in the same building. The hotel has an unusual design. The ground floor entrance simply consists of a double set of lifts where you ascend to a small reception area on the second floor – more like entering an office than a hotel. On the same floor is a large lounge, one side of which has tables where breakfast is served. Free wi-fi access is available in the lounge and throughout the hotel.

The standards of both design and comfort are superlative. Rooms are extremely comfortable and well appointed. I had a double bed with a view looking down on a pedestrian precinct. Standard features included air-conditioning, minibar, room safe and flat screen TV. The stylish bathroom contained a shower but no bathtub. There was a wide variety of food and drink available as room service. Breakfast buffet was of good quality and contained hot and cold food although for the standard of hotel the variety of choice was slightly disappointing. The lack of a bar was surprising. Of course, there are plenty of bars in Bilbao but the majority are very small and crowded and it’s pleasant to be able to have a quiet relaxing drink in a hotel bar. The first floor has an entrance to the restaurant, although this is actually part of the Casino complex. There was an outside terrace but, this being November, it was not open – despite the excellent hot, sunny weather!

Considering the standard of hotel, the price was extremely reasonable at around 75 euros plus breakfast. Location, just off the Gran Via is perfect.

“Peace and Quiet”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

Our fourth-floor room overlooking a pedestrian precinct was comfortable and quiet. Excellent beds and extra pillows and blankets were speedily produced by reception. We arrived at 11 in the morning (having emailed beforehand) and the room was ready. That was impressive. Reception staff were pleasant and efficient. Good value for about 75 euros a night. We didn't include breakfast because the Spanish like to eat very late and we couldn't face a breakfast buffet after blow-outs the previous evenings. But the food and choice looked fine. Overall an excellent 4-star hotel which is well-stuated near most of the action. We will confidently choose another hotel from the Sercotel chain next time we go to Spain.
Trips out: Guernica (Gernika) is an hour away on the train and the tourism office (closed 2 to 4) has a town trail which includes bitter memories of the Nazi bombing raid that killed thousands. San Sebastian (Donostia) is more than two and half hour away on a train that stops everywhere (there's a slightly faster one at 0934). We took the train there and enjoyed excellent scenery most of the way. The bus back took just 70 minutes on the motorway. It was a sunny in San Sebastian so there was plenty of stimulating walking on the hills and beaches. The town has some fine old buildings -- marred by pockets of dismal post-war development dotted along the seafront and, particularly, on the east side of the river where there is a monstrous tower block that should be demolished. Note that both these trains leave from Bilbao's Atxuri station which is at the southern end of the tram line (not the main Abando station). Bilbao's old town (Casco Viejo) is fascinating and heaving at night, particularly Plaza Nueva, the main square. There are promenade walks on both sides of the river to the Guggenheim and back. Early evening sees a lively paseo on the eastern bank. We liked this city a lot -- compared to some other parts of Spain the tourist numbers are low so restaurant and bar prices are geared towards locals. One dining tip -- behind the hotel is Wok Buffet. It has a massive range of freshly-cooked Asian food (if you like that sort of thing as a change from tapas) and, late on a Saturday evening, it was packed out.. Eat as much as you can for around 13 euros.

Room Tip: Overlooking the pedestrian precinct.
