“Comfortable, near metro & (paid) parking available!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 November 2010

This hotel is a modern business hotel with a variey of facilities (bar, pool etc) that we did not use as we spent our time sightseeing. Rooms are comfortable is starting to show a little wear and tear. Bathroom was large, good hot water, separate toilet and good toiletry selection. Room had a much welcomed fridge with mini bar, decent TV but no English language channels and I was unable to alter the language on the dubbed programmes (as is sometimes possible). There is the odd configuration of two King Singles pushed togeher but made up separately that is so common in Spanish hotels (haven´t they heard of double beds?). Overall though, very comfortable for a few nights. Free wifi too. The hotel is quite close to the metro (perhaps 1 1/2 blocks) and is easy to use which is probably just as well as it´s a very, very long hill down to the old town (but we walked it a few times too).

Touring is always a hassle when it come to big cities if you want to stay relatively close to the sights and park somewhere that is close to your hotel but doesn´t cost the earth. Barcelo Avenida has it´s own carpark in front of the hotel which whilst open to the elements, is at least gated and also under surveillance from security cameras. It´s 14€ for 24hrs which is pricey (only 15€ undercover in Berlin) but we were happy not to give up our key so some attendant could take it for a Ferris Bueller spin or have to park four blocks away.

“A Bargain for the price paid!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2010

Was quite impressed with this option which is located not too far from the Casco Viejo in Bilbao (closest metro station is Santutxu which is one stop away from the Old town on the excellent and very cheap metro system.). The hotel is a pretty modern affair with reasonably large rooms. The Main part of the room as you come in leads on to the bathroom and storage area where you will find loads of storage space and hangers which seems to be a rarity nowadays in hotel rooms. Inside the wardrobe is a safe for locking away valuables. The Bathroom itself is interesting, Large yes and with a very large tub, enough for two people to comfortably sit in to be honest.
Off this and this is where the room scores plus points is a door to the bedroom area itself, so this means that there are two sets of doors in between the corridor and the sleeping area which is perfect for light sleepers. Beds are on the large side. A Double bed is in effect two reasonably sized singles pushed together. Honesty Minibar in the room which is reasonably priced and also free in room wi-fi!!
The hotel also benefits from a Spa/Fitness centre on site which i unfortunately did not get to use as this closed at 4pm on a Sunday (the only negative to the stay in effect), and also has a reasonably priced Cafe downstairs as well as restaurant plus vending machines and a complimentary copy of ABC newspaper each day. The only negative I would say about this hotel is the lack of foreign TV channels for guests but in all, this was a very good option and a steal at the price of £40.00/€45.00 a night on the website I booked this via.
As noted by other reviewers, the city is a pleasant surprise and a worthwhile place to pass a weekend checking out the sights and stuffing your face full of the tasty Pintxos.

“Terrible Air Conditioning”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 August 2010

Not a bad place overall. Nice staff and clean, relatively nice rooms. But our air conditioning didn't work. In fact it made the room hotter than just having the window open. We told the front desk to have someone check it out...but nothing changed. We sweated like farm animals. Also the water from the shower was only hot, no cold. We had the maintenance come up and fix it, and that resolved the problem temporarily. But then it happened again. Also, you must pay 14 Euros per day to park your car and pay around 20 for the gym... Factor that into your decision-making when deciding where to stay in Bilbao...Also it's slightly outside of the center, though convenient if you are comfortable taking the metro.

“A surprising hotel in a surprising city”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 July 2010

We booked through Lastminute.com's 'Top Secret Hotels' so we didn't know about the location before booking. It was a little too far out from Bilbao's old town to walk there, but it was right around the corner from the metro and it was only one or two stops from the centre.

We were in Bilbao to get the ferry but had a couple of days to explore. The reception staff were very helpful with maps and directions. The bar and restaurant were nice, though the tapas were overpriced in the bar compared to the rest of the city.

The room was very nice, and was quiet despite facing the road. The only slightly annoying thing was the 'walk-through' bathroom when you entered the room.

“great price, but could improve”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 May 2010

Front desk personal was great, though we suspect a cleaning lady entered our room to have a smoke as we arrived some hours after the check in to find a smelly room. On the first night the sheets had a few holes and the curtains were a bit old and had a few holes too. The hotel is well located but be prepared to climb up a steppy street on your way back from the city's center.
